Daughter: Okay. What about them?

Father: Well, uh, you take the good. You take the bad. You take them both, and there you have... uh...

Daughter: What?

The father is too nervous discussing this topic that he doesn't know what else to say. He simply picks up his remote and turns to The Rerun Channel. The theme song to The Facts of Life begins to play.

Father: What's say we just *watch* The Facts of Life instead of talking about them.

Daughter: Okay.

Father: (quietly) Thanks Rerun Channel.

I think Mary Tyler Moore probably has the most effective pilot ever. It sets up the premise and characters very well, and they didn't have to change a lot until people started going to spinoffs. Yes, the Mary Tyler Moore pilot is a classic. After all, she had spunk. I also agree that Frasier started off well. In fact, I pretty much enjoyed that series all the way through. Once again, I agree with you about Barney Miller. I watched the pilot episode last week on DVD and it wasn't very impressive. I've seen other episodes before, so I know it's a good show, I just didn't get that from the first episode.

You didn't mention it but I also think Bewitched had a strong first two seasons. I feel the show was at its best when it was a romantic comedy about these newlyweds. When it focused more on the wacky adventures caused by witchcraft, it became less interesting to me. And when Dick York left, it became very bland. But those first two seasons... excellent! Oh and in case you or anyone else was wondering, we air those seasons in black and white.

The Frasier episode "Can't Buy Me Love" is pretty interesting. About half of it is very funny. Frasier's love interest, though, has to work through what was supposed their first date. She has Frasier babysit her daughter, which is something that would never fly today.

Is that the episode where he babysits the woman's daughter and she ends up lying about her mom and Frasier believes the girl and then dumps her mom, only to find out the daughter was making it all up? If so, I felt bad for Frasier in that one. She basically dumped him for believing her daughter.

Something else from the '90s that probably wouldn't fly today was Mr. Turner on Boy Meets World. He was one of the teachers during the second, third and fourth seasons of the show. In the finale of season two, he invited teenage Shawn to live with him since Shawn's dad had walked out on him. Now it was all innocent and a noble gesture on Turner's part, I just don't think that's a storyline they'd do today. Also, Mr. Turner and his friend, another teacher, Mr. Williams both hung out at Chubbies, which was the teenage hangout. Again all innocent stuff that's just kind of weird looking back on. That could be our new motto: The Rerun Channel - Home of innocent stuff that's just kind of weird looking back on!

Frasier's just about at it's peak for me here. I love "Botched Language of Cranes" and the restaurant scene in "Adventures in Paradise." The Addams Family is in very heavy rotation on Pluto TV right now. I've caught a good number now, and one episode after another is excellent. Morticia's sister Ophelia turns up several months before Serena appears on Bewitched.

A few episode mentions…

Taxi - “Louie Sees the Light” (Mon. Oct. 7, 10:30pm) – This is the episode where Louie fears death and makes a pact with God to be a better person if He lets him survive the surgery. Louie sticks to it for a while, but soon reverts to his normal, rotten self. The reason I’m mentioning this episode is because it has one of my favorite Latka moments. A moment, by the way, that was cut from syndication and I saw it for the first time on DVD. At the hospital, Louie offers a box of chocolates to the gang. He then turns to Latka and says “Have one.” Latka precedes to eat one chocolate after another… after another.. after another, while Bobby looks sick thinking about all that candy Latka is consuming (a tad bit of overacting from Jeff Conaway, but I like it). When Latka has finished, Louie says “I said ‘have one.’” Latka responds, “Oh, you said ‘Have one’? I thought you said ‘Leave one.’”

I Love Lucy – “Lucy Changes Her Mind” (Wed. Oct. 9, 12:30pm) – I fondly remember watching the scene where Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel keep changing tables at the restaurant, and Lucy keeps changing her food order to whatever the last person just ordered. I don’t know, this scene has just always stuck out to me.

The Honeymooners – “Pal ‘O Mine” (Sat. Oct. 12, 9:30am) – This episode has an emotional moment. After Ralph has basically dumped Norton over something stupid (I think he didn’t invite him to a party and Kramden then thought Norton bought him a ring, but really it turned out to be for a co-worker), Ralph brings home a new friend. They get to badmouthing Ed, when suddenly someone comes into the apartment and tells them that Norton has been in an explosion down in the sewers and that he’s in the hospital. Ralph is scared and worried for his pal. When the new friend says something like “I just said you don’t like Norton.” Kramden responds with “What I SAY about Norton is one thing. How I FEEL about him is another!”

The Honeymooners – “Pal ‘O Mine” (Sat. Oct. 12, 9:30am)

I was always hoping to make this a pick of the week, but it always just missed.

There's a lot of fun episodes this week: Bewitched has Uncle Arthur's first episode in "The Joker Is a Card." It's odd how sitcoms don't seem to realize that they can get funnier just by having a character who is supposed to be funny to the people around him or her.

Two episodes, Barney Miller's "Hash," and Frasier's "The Innkeepers" are episodes that are always included when someone is showing clips from the show. I tend to think that The Innkeepers is the better episode - it has more going on and more energy. Barney Miller has to slow down a bit, because it has multiple story lines that have to be accomodated.

A couple personal favorites: Frasier's "Martin Does It His Way," had to have been written by a Sinatra fan. The song is exactly what a Sinatra fan would come up with to submit to Frank.

The Barney Miller episode "Abduction" is magnificent, one my favorite episodes from any series. I'm surprised that it's No. 51 in the series, I would have thought it came later when the show had developed more. The first thing I like is that David Clennon appears as the bearded cult leader/restauranteur Bodhisattva just three episodes before he appears as a southerner working for the State Department in the "Asylum" episode. It's a great example of the show bringing good actors back again and again in different roles, and not caring if anyone noticed.

And the writing for Bodhisattva is awesome, as the shady holy man switches back and forth between lofty philosophizing and practical street language: "You should visit us, I think you would enjoy it....It is a place where one can nourish the body, uplift the spirit, and renew the heart...we also deliver." Is he sincere, or a complete fraud? I don't think there's any way to know.
