I learned that The Monkees released an album in the 80's called Pool It and I would like to know if this album was released as their comeback album. From what I learned about this album is that Micky Delonz is absent and only the late Davy Jones and Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith perform on it. From what I listened to of Pool It it looks like The Monkees were trying to attempt an 80's rock sound to compete with rock groups of the 80's but it looks like this album failed and is considered the least known of The Monkees albums. Also did Mike Nesmith leave The Monkees when Pool It debuted in the 80's due to problems or did Mike decide to retire from performing?

Apparently in the mid-80's, The Monkees experienced a revived interest in their music and shows when their series was aired in a marathon of episodes on MTV in 1986. This created a demand and a new fan base had arrived who had not seen them in their heyday in the mid-60's. The band had reservations about regrouping and recording new music.
Eventually the band (with the exception of Michael Nesmith) released a new single, "That Was Then, This Is Now" in 1986. Nesmith declined to join the reunited Monkees as he was involved with his own Pacific Arts video company. He did later appear that year in a Christmas video with the rest of the group. The 'Pool It!' album featured only the three official regrouped Monkees minus Nesmith. The song "Heart And Soul" reached #87 on the charts, while the album hit only #72. The problem was that, like many of the band's earlier material in the 60's, outside musicians and writers were mostly used on it. The actual Monkees may have had little input in this album, which may account for its tepid sales, in spite of the renewed "Monkee Mania" going on MTV and on Nickolodeon at the time. |
