Question Typecast

What does it mean for actors to be typecast?

That means that they're always asked to play the same role..say an actor becomes really famous for playing a vampire. After the series ends, that actor is only getting offers to play a vampire.

Another example is if a actor or actress plays a bad tempered person in a hit show, When that show ends they will likley only get offers to play bad tempered characters.

Ask anyone from the cast of "Star Trek."

A good example of typecasting is Bob Denver as Gilligan, or Adam West as Batman.

Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle would, I think, be a good example of typecasting .

Or Burt Ward as Robin- I think Adam West has come to the fact that Adam West died the second he put on that Batman costume and was reborn again as Batman. I guess you could say Burt Ward should know by now that he is forever casted as Robin. Others that have been typecasted:

Adam West
Burt Ward
Jerry Mathers
Gary Coleman
Bob Denver

I kind of feel sorry for the above actors in a way. I'm sure Gary Coleman gets angry everytime some stranger walks up to him and says, "Whatchoo talkin' bout?" I think Burt Ward runs a business now, but just imagine how he feels if someone says to him, "Holy Oleo, Batman!"

Now, I don't know any of these people on a personal level. Maybe they are pleased they are so remembered. You never know.

Max Baer Jr. was typecast after playing Jethro on TV's The Beverly Hillbillies.
Even though it wasn't a sitcom, George Reeves was typecast after appearing as Superman.

One of the dangers of being a TV show star is what shows you're on or what characters you're playing on a show. once you're typecast, it's pretty hard to get out of it.

Let's face it, I liked Diff'rent Strokes when it was on the air and in reruns, but he really wasn't going to get many roles outside of Arnold Jackson. I think in his case, at first he might have been upset with being typecast but as time wore on without any new roles to play, he grew to accept it.
