It's not you. There are too many westerns!

It's really odd, because they're all reruns. How popular can they be if they don't make any new ones?

I agree. Almost half the shows and movies on these OTA stations are Westerns, many of them super obscure. It's annoying to me because I really hate this genre. I'm thinking there are so many of them because the rights are so much cheaper than other programs and movies.

On the contrary, they're probably popular because there aren't any new ones. (They can't make any new ones because it's not P.C. to base a genre around a questionable part of American history.) These reruns are the best that the fans of this period are gonna get, so they're probably giving them a lot of play.

There's a segment of the population that likes these Westerns with the guns and shooting, that's a reason why they remain popular. I'm not a fan of Westerns either, I'll watch one in a rare while but that's it.

I wish we could get a channel to air Bonanza or even Gunsmoke here in Canada. I guess if they never go off the air in the USA you don't get the chance to miss them.

The only Western I've seen airing on TV in years is The Rifleman and that airs on AMC.

There are some good episodes of The Rifleman. Not the ones where they're fighting all the time. Like the episode where Mark and Lucas are stranded in the desert. Or when Mark comes down with a disease.

The episode where the Chinese people come to town and want to open a new laundry is stereotypical, which is bad, but it also shows an accepting attitude by most people in the town. And the bad guy who doesn't, leaves town in the end.

In my eyes why retro channels add so many westerns is because they are a popular genre next to sitcoms and they are filled with adventure excitement and an occasional western romance storyline. But I do feel that other western shows need to be seen besides Bonanza and The Big Valley Wagon Train The Rifleman and The High Chaparral. Like when's the last time reruns of Sky King aired on TV or how about airing the Annie Oakley series? I cannot believe that Bonanza is the most popular western show in the world but after watching and rewatching every single season of Bonanza it gets tiresome after the first few times but now it seems that every single retro channel from INSP to METV airs Bonanza. How about airing The Roy Rogers Show or The Young Riders?. But I noticed that Heroes And Icons has a whole morning hour devoted to westerns full of westerns that haven't been aired in a long time in addition to The High Chaparral but they should cut down on reruns of westerns and add more classic sitcoms because there's other TV markets besides classic westerns

If you happen to eat in a small diner somewhere in the Southwest, chances are they will have the tv on the wall dialed into a western. They are very popular in little towns.

Canada used to have a station that aired mostly Westerns that was called Lonestar. It had a lot of the old favorites plus newer series like Lonesome Dove but, like with most specialty stations from that era (1999-2004) the format got changed, different shows were added, the name was changed more than once, and it turned into a mere ghost of its former self. It's now called MovieTime.

The one thing that I would complain about with MeTV having so many westerns is that they are all on in the afternoons when they would be better served in the late evening to late night slots freeing up the afternoons for shows like "I Love Lucy" and "Leave It To Beaver" which they now have at around 5 am. That's very bad!
