This is a silly thing I've been wondering, but the watch that Mama wears in nearly EVERY episode....do you think it's part of her "Mama attire" or do you think that was the watch Vickie REALLY wore in real life and she just kept it on during the show? It's just a little thing that I've always wondered... There are things that are obviously part of Mama's outfit, like the beads, glasses and earrings, but what about the watch?

I guess one reason that makes me wonder is b/c it's sorta hard to picture a woman as old fashioned as Mama wear a watch....I dunno it just sorta seems like it.

Why? Grandmothers wore watches before cell phones were around. Even more "old-fashioned" grandmothers were more apt to wear watch before actual jewelry jewelry, since watches were practical.

I dunno, I guess b/c in MANY ways I associate Mama with Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies and older women LIKE her....just her style, always in a dress, those little Ben Franklin type glasses from the early 1900s lol And I just remember in one episode Granny was talking about how foolish watches were when she could tell time with shadows and the sun lol

Both my grandmothers wore a little dainty watch like Thelma's. My mom used to joke that there was no way they could them time on them because their eyesight when they were in their 80s and 90s wasn't very good. She even bought her mother a big watch with big numbers and my grandma thought it was hideous and refused to wear it!

Yeah my grandmother did as well

But I'm wondering if the watch was part of Mama's outfit or was it what Vickie really wore in real life?

It seems like I've seen Vickie play mama in recent renditions and she doesn't wear the watch, but wears everything else.

I also remember in a couple of Burnett skits she doesn't wear it.
