The legacy of “The Smothers Comedy Hour”
In the end, I think the Smothers Brothers lost the battle (CBS canceled their comedy-variety show in 1969 after being on the air about two years because it had become too controversial) but won the war (they won a breath-of-contract suit against CBS and the network soon radically revamped their programming to cater to the audience that liked the show).
