"Toy Story 4" Tops Box Office for 2nd Weekend

Toy Story 4 Tops the Weekend Box Office With $118 Million

Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 topped the weekend box office and did so with the franchise's largest opening weekend yet, but even it seems to have been bitten by the summer's sequel slump as it too delivered well below studio and industry expectations.

On top of that, UA Releasing's Child's Play finished in second place while also missing forecasted pre-weekend expectations while Lionsgate and Summit's Anna fell just shy of a spot in the top ten.







With an estimated $118 million, Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 topped the weekend box office, though fell well short of the studio's $140+ million expectations, not to mention Mojo's lofty weekend forecast.

The performance is, however, the best of the franchise, topping Toy Story 3's $110.3 million opening back in 2010 and fourth largest animated opening ever, which are hardly milestones you can ignore. It's also worth mentioning this is the third largest opening weekend of the year, giving Disney the top four openings of 2019.



Also in Toy Story 4's favor is some of the best reviews of the franchise to go along with an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Internationally, Toy Story 4 brought in $120 million form 37 markets, representing 64% of the overall marketplace and a $238 million global launch.







UA Releasing's Child's Play delivered a second place finish with an estimated $14 million. Heading into the weekend the film was tracking similarly to Universal and Blumhouse's Ma, which debuted with over $18 million just a few weeks ago, and even the film's Thursday night previews ($1.65 million) suggested it was well on its way to a similar opening.

However, it was unable to sustain its momentum and came up shy of the $16-18 million pre-weekend expectations. The film carries a reported budget around $10 million and received a "C+" CinemaScore from opening day crowds.







Landing in third position is Disney's Aladdin with an estimated $12.2 million, dipping just -29.5% as it enters its fifth week in release with a domestic cume just shy of $288 million.

Internationally, the film added nearly $33 million this weekend for an overseas cume that now totals $522.6 million and a global tally topping $810 million.







Sony's Men in Black International is already cratering after a disappointing debut last weekend, dropping -64% in its sophomore frame with an estimated $10.75 million and a domestic cume that now totals just over $52 million after ten days in release.

Internationally, the film added just over $30 million for an international cume topping $129 million and a worldwide total just over $182 million.







Rounding out the top five is Universal and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2, which dipped -58% in the face of Toy Story 4's debut, with an estimated $10.3 million for the weekend. The film's domestic cume now stands at $117.5 million as it enters its third week in release.

The film also added another $10.8 million internationally this weekend for an overseas cume that now totals over $77 million and a global tally just shy of $195 million.







Outside not only the top five, but just missing the top ten, is Lionsgate's release of Summit's Anna. The action thriller from Luc Besson debuted with an estimated $3.5 million.

The film received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.







In limited release, Neon's Wild Rose opened in four theaters with an estimated $56,183 ($14,046 PTA); Magnolia's Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am opened in four theaters with an estimated $44,000 ($11,000 PTA); Metrograph re-released A Bigger Splash in one New York location with an estimated $18,000; and IFC's The Quiet One opened in six locations with $10,561 ($1,760 PTA).

Toy Story 4 Looks to Repeat at Weekend Box Office over Annabelle & Yesterday

New releases have seen some struggles as of late, with several summer sequels debuting well below expectations and this weekend sees yet another sequel in Annabelle Comes Home attempting to avoid a similar fate.

On top of that, Universal unveils an original project in Danny Boyle's Yesterday looking to ride a wave of positivity into the weekend.







At the top of the charts, look for Disney and Pixar's Toy Story 4 to repeat at #1. Looking at past Toy Story releases the second wide weekend has seen a range of performances, but we're looking specifically at Toy Story 3's -46% second weekend drop as well as Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory, which dropped -56% and -46% respectively.

Given Toy Story 4's debut hues a bit closer to Toy Story 3 and Dory we're leaning more toward anticipating a similar, -46% drop this weekend, which would result in a sophomore performance over $65 million, pushing the film's domestic gross over $240 million by the end of the weekend.







In the runner-up position we come to Warner Bros. and New Line's Annabelle Comes Home, marking the third film in the Annabelle franchise and sixth official entry into The Conjuring franchise.

The film began playing in theaters on Wednesday with Tuesday night previews beginning at 6PM, where the film generated an impressive $3.5 million. However, that only translated into a $7.2 million opening day along with a "B-" CinemaScore, the lowest of the franchise.







Universal's high concept feature Yesterday is looking at a third place finish, though it could be anywhere from a respectable $11-14 million, or perhaps climb as high as $17 million and move into second place for the weekend.

Directed by Danny Boyle, we've had a bit of a hard time finding a direct comp, though films such as I Feel Pretty and Isn't It Romantic come to mind in terms of concept, while the likes of Long Shot, Book Club and The Intern seem like solid audience comps. A look at IMDb page view data for all of those comps is positive, the only thing that has us slightly hesitating on going too high with our forecast right now is the theater count.

All of the comps mentioned, outside of Book Club — which opened over Mother's Day weekend — debuted in over 3,000 locations with I Feel Pretty debuting in nearly 3,500 theaters.



Yesterday is looking at only a 2,603 location launch, which has us anticipating an opening around $12+ million, which actually feels a bit conservative.

Additional analysis suggests a debut closer to $14 million and if it can truly maximize on its theater selection, an opening even higher wouldn't surprise us in the least.







Disney's Aladdin continues its strong and steady performance as it enters its sixth weekend in release.

Right now we're looking for a -30% dip or so this weekend, which would give the film a $9+ million three-day as it's domestic total climbs over $305 million.







Rounding out the top five look for The Secret Life of Pets 2, looking at a drop around -38% or so, and a three-day over $6 million for a domestic cume right around $130 million by the end of the weekend.







Also worth mentioning is Avengers: Endgame, which Disney is expanding back into 2,025 locations (+1,040) this weekend after announcing the box office juggernaut will be released on digital at the end of July and Blu-ray in mid-August.

The big sell this weekend is the film comes with an intro from director Anthony Russo, an unfinished deleted scene and a sneak peek at next week's release of Spider-Man: Far from Home. How many folks will venture to theaters to catch the film yet again for these extras is near impossible to determine, but we're anticipating at least a $2.5 million three-day as the film gets closer and closer to $840 million domestically.







In limited release, IFC will debut Ophelia into 50 theaters; Sony Classics will launch Maiden in six theaters; and Greenwich will release Three Peaks.
