If you've ever watched the E! True Hollywood Story on Home Improvement, Patricia was pretty well spoken and didn't say anything directly rude about Tim. Anyway, she later talked about the episode where Jonathan Taylor Thomas returned after having left the show. She said that the episode's script was unnecessarily rude and disrespectful towards his character. She was angry retelling the story, boiling it down to some butthurt grown-ups trying to get revenge on a kid they watched grow up.

To me, the way that Randy's last appearance was written made sense. Of course the beat was going to go on in some way inside the Taylor house after he had left and it did. It would be no different when it came time for Brad to leave for college and then of course when Randy and Mark left for the same reason.
