I've been slowly reading the collected volumes. It's interesting seeing how characters were introduced- Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, and Sally were all brought on as babies then grew up to toddlers, then to pre-teen children in the course of time. Though, except for Sally, all of them basically became Charlie Brown's age.
Woodstock came on as an unnamed bird, and was around for a couple of years before getting a name.
Sherman and Violet were Charlie Brown's original friends, both got pushed to the background when the more known characters came along. Violet became a minor character, and Sherman basically vanished.

I'm on the volume now (1971-72) that introduces Marcie.
