...and his social and political views? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there was a later episode were the wealthy parents wouldn’t buy their son a $60 USD shirt, and where the father (Cosby) bought his teenage television daughter a used 1960s automobile (in 1980s).

I'm afraid so. It seems that Bill Cosby became more anviliicous as the years went by.

Winifred Hervey talks about what it was like to write for the first season of The Cosby Show.

Around 5:00, she says Cosby would shoot down ideas that created conflict, and therefore comedy: He decreed that Cliff and Clair didn't argue, and that their kids didn't lie.
