Robert Morse is celebrating his 88th today. After growing up in the Boston area, Morse began an acting career of over six decades in the mid-1950s. He made his Broadway debut in 1955, as Barnaby Tucker in Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker. Three years later, Morse reprised the role in a the feature film adaptation.

Many of our readers will know Morse best for the role of Bertram Cooper on Mad Men. He was a recurring character on the first two seasons and then promoted to regular status. Interestingly, however, all of his five Emmy nominations in the role were in the Outstanding Guest Actor category.


Morse has had a distinguished stage career. He is a five-time Tony nominee, winning twice. His first win was for Best Actor in a Musical, for Frank Loesser’s How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, as J. Pierrepont Finch. He won again nearly 30 years later, playing Truman Capote in Jay Presson Allen’s Tru.

Morse reprised both of his Tony-winning stage performances on screen. He starred in the 1967 feature adaptation of How to Succeed…, and won an Emmy for an American Playhouse production of Tru. In the past few years, Morse has returned to Broadway in a revival of The Front Page, a production which also starred his Mad Men costar John Slattery. He also played journalist Dominick Dunne on season 1 of American Crime Story.
