Why have teacup puppies and small dogs becoming the popular pets now?

I have noticed that the top pets to own now are teacup puppies and small dogs such as toy poodles and I would like to know what the reason is? Because ever since Paris Hilton started this craze it seems that small dogs have replaced cats and kittens as the popular pets and I have never figured it out. Is it because people take their pets everywhere or is it because small dogs are easier to take care of? Because nearly every time I go out I see people carrying small dogs at the mall and other places and I think this trend will become more popular than ever. Another thing I can't figure out is why do people dress up their small dogs and teacup puppies a lot because I have seen outfits specially designed for dogs and while I think it's cute I cannot see why animals have to wear clothes
