Angry Bub's Beautiful Songs Cut Again!

Very interesting edits and cuts made to the Sons episode I saw today. Every Monday I first watch my original 3 Sons DVDs I created from original old tapes and then I watch the same episode from the officially commercial released Season 1 DVDs. These commercial DVDs all have the original background music replaced, this I know, but today was the first time I saw the commercial DVD actually edit out a scene that was in my original Family channel version. This Monday’s episode was “The Croaker” that I watched twice from each source, my own home made DVD from my old tapes and then the official DVD.
OK, here are the very major differences.

1st in the opening scene at breakfast the 1st 4 minutes of breakfast happenings was cut out of the FAM channel version, very clever editing though, you’d never know it till you saw the commercial version.

2nd edit comes when at the same beginning of the show where Fam channel picks up and Bub is saying good day to the kids going to school in the Fam channel version the frog comes back into the house following Bub just once, then Bub talks to the frog in the kitchen. In the commercial version the frog actually enters the house after Bub twice, first time Bub chases the frog around the kitchen with a broom then carries it outside on the broom then the frog comes back in a 2nd time, it’s at this point where the Fam channel version picks up this scene. So if you didn’t know better on FAM channel the frog only enters the house once, very clever Fam channel edit though.

3rd, and it’s here where it’s the commercial disc very sneakily edits out a scene that was in the FAM channel version. It comes as Bub sits at the kitchen table with the frog talking to it then Bub starts to sing “Did Your Mother Come From Ireland” (great Bing Crosby song, by the way) and then Bub sings “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”. Nice huh? Well, the commercial DVDs totally cut out Bub singing both of these songs. They very sneakily only show the very end of this scene showing the back of Bub at the table, actually singing but in the commercial DVDs the fake background music starts to blare out, Bub's singing is muted as the scene then fades to black. Very sly edit, you would never know Bub sang anything, even though they couldn’t help showing the back of Bub’s head moving side to side as he was actually singing but now it just looks like his head is bobbing to the loud fake background music. Very clever, unless you saw the FAM channel version you’d never know Bub sang at all.

So in the first 2 cases it was the FAM channel employing very sly edits from the original show but in the 3rd case it was the commercial discs slyly editing out the Bub songs.

Well, based on this, I think I need to check the MeTV version, but I pretty well already know the answer. I think I can edit a more-complete episode, using the MeTV version and the Canadian TV Land version, but the volume on the Canadian version is really low (this seems to be a problem with Canadian versions--I have another show done from Comedy Gold out of Canada that's has the same problem.)

Is the quality on the Fam version pretty good?

Songs as old as these SHOULD be public domain.

Talking Well, sir

Yes, well I decided a while ago to stop watching the ME TV versions of Seasons 1 & 2 because they use that same fake background music that the commercial discs infected the shows with. So what I've been doing is first watching the original music version from my original old recordings from the late '80's and early '90's, these are the FAMily channel and Nick at Nite & TV Land versions I recorded on tape and then in 2005 I transferred those tapes to DVD. So until I get to season 3 I'm ignoring the ME TV versions after that I'll watch my original music recordings first then the ME TV version since there won't be any more commercial versions to see. But now it's first my original DVD then the commercial fake music version.

Yes, I'm quite happy with the Family Channel version, picture in most cases is even better than the Nick at Nite version. The sound quality of the voices is still better on the commercial discs as those shows are all re-mastered and restored albeit with phony music replacements. The original DVDs though have the disadvantage of being edited as opposed to most all the commercial versions which are uncut. The Croaker is one main exception to the rule of the commercial discs being uncut.
