Hello, fellow "Alice" fans!
I have a question. You know in the opening credits of the show, they show the "Mel's Diner" sign, with the "14 ounce" coffee cup. Does anyone know if this was a real sign from a real diner? Or, was it just a set piece? Was there ever a sign? Did it really exist? I also remember in one episode, there was this handy man who had the hots for Alice. In the end of the episode, he went up on the roof to fix the sign. But the sign was somewhat different. One of the things I remember was that the hot coffee pouring out of the coffee cup didn't have light bulbs in it. In the opening credits, the coffee is lighted. Also, I noticed that the sign was reversed. When the went on the roof, the coffee cup was on the right hand side & that sign that said "Mel's" was on the left hand side. This doesn’t make any sense because, in the opening credits, they show the "Coffee" on the right hand side & "Mel's" sign on the left. So, when they went on the roof, looking at the sign from the opposite side, the "coffee" should have been on the left & the "Mel's" sign on the right. Not unless they shot the opening credits from the roof & the "Coffee" wasn't lighted. They also showed the sign again where Vera was feeding the birds that had made a nest on the sign. Oh, well, I just wanted to ask one question & I told a story. Any information on the "Mel's Diner" sign would be most appreciative! Thank you so much for your time! Jonathan |

Good question. I would think it was a real sign for some place since it looked pretty real. I'm not positive though.

I lived in Phoenix when the show "Alice" was broadcast. I remember the local news (possibly channel 10) doing a story about the show "Alice". The sign was real and I believe the news story said the sign was located on a restaurant (greasy spoon) in Phoenix, AZ. I am sure that defintely sure there is no 'Mel's restaurant' sign above the coffee cup in the real life.
