Default Grady and Lamont as spin off instead of Sanford Arms.

Sanford and Son show was still popular on NBC when Redd Foxx decided to quit the show and do his variety show on ABC. I think producers should have continued the show as spin off with Lamont and Grady as star of show.

After Sanford and Son, Lamont went to CBS to do the sitcom “Baby I am back”, and that didn’t went too well. So NBC should have brought Lamont back to do spin off of Sanford&Son with Grady as his new partner.

Lamont and Grady already showed they had good chemistry together in season three when Fred left show temporary due to salary dispute. And with old cast such as Leroy, Skillet, Bubble, Rollo, Ester and Woodrow, the spin off might have been a hit.

Definitely would have fared much better than Sanford Arms which only lasted 8 shows.

Once Redd Foxx announced that he was leaving the series the producers offered Demond Wilson a new contract to continue to do the series without him, but Demond declined it. The Fredless episodes were never very popular anyway.

It would not have been a spinoff since Lamont was one of the main characters of the show. It would have been Sanford and Son without Fred

I don't think the show would have succeeded even if Wilson stayed on the show. Redd Foxx couldn't even get the show restarted a few years later even though I thought that show was good.

"Dummy Incorporated"..that's funny guys

I think one reason Demond Wilson refused to stay on show after Redd left might be the lucrative deal offer by CBS. Demond said they offered him one million dollar to do Baby I'am Back sitcom.

I read long time ago that rumer was circulating in media back then that since Sanford and Son was such a monster hit for NBC on Friday nights, CBS and ABC tried to dismantle NBC's golden egg by offering Redd and Demond lucrative deals to steal them away from NBC. As to practically kill Sanford&Son to boost their own shows ratings on Friday nights.

I watched that show on BET back in ealy 2000's and it did have its own moments. But it didn't have any funny supporting characters except maybe Rollo. And too many fat jokes at expense of Cal

Really Redd and Lawanda made the show. A show spinning around
“Esther” would have worked...she was HOOT! The best character on the show...imo

Yes, they did a show spinning around Grady and his family life so why not esther? Instead they use the same house with new characters

I enjoyed the Lamont and Grady episodes. I think it could have worked if ratings expectations were lowered a bit and other characters like Aunt Esther stayed on. I had the chance to meet "Grady" when he visited my workplace many years ago. He was such a kind and gracious man. I bet he posed for hundreds of Polaroids (it was that long ago) and signed several hundred more autographs and he smiled and joked with everyone the whole time and it was very genuine.
