Beaver’s Friends? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Seems like little Beaver was always being tormented by these so called friends. He always had to prove something to these kids. Accusing him of having a sweetheart or being a teacher’s pet so he had to go to great lengths to prove it. Beaver was always asking hypothetical questions of Ward to remedy his antagonizing over a childhood problem and found lying was a good way out. Did anyone have similar fears in school? I know it was a long time ago but maybe you can remember.

Ah, yes, the hypothetical questions from Beaver. Had he posed the real problem, the episode would end too early.

I liked his question in Beaver's Tree. He jumped thru hoops to not ask June about the tree. Of course, there were lots of others.

I admit I did some dumb things as a kid I probably wouldn't have if it wasn't for my friends, but it was never to prove anything or being tricked in to doing it alone, they were right there with me. I still haven't told my parents some of the stuff we got up to.

I don't remember what is was for, but back in elementary school I got in trouble with one of my teachers, I was being blamed for something I didn't do- unlike June my mom didn't wait and shove the problem off on her husband, she went down to the school and ripped into the teacher.

Yes, I remember in HS I got what they called a discipline record for something (I don't even remember what) I didn't do. A discipline record was a serious thing, equal to three demerits. I don't remember the succession of things, but probably a certain number of demerits/discipline records got you put into suspension, which was an in-school thing. I imagine a certain number of these got you expelled.

My dad had a fit when he found out, and went to the school and saw the principal. I don't know what he said nor do I remember what exactly the school did, but it was reduced or expunged. I never had the "pleasure" of being suspended.

I think all of our parents would cringe at some of the things we did. But in the case of kids in our small town (in the late 50s into the 60s), all it amounted to was things like climbing too high in trees or dealing with bullies (bullies weren't the big deal they are now and it was no matter for the school to deal with).

Yeah Beaver did ask those hypothetical questions like the one you mentioned in Beaver’s Tree. I forget the question but remember June saying that your money belongs to you and no one can take it away. Same type of question he asks Ward in Lost Watch about the bank losing your money. Ward said he would call the cops too. He also asked a really hypothetical question in Baby Picture about would Ward go to his father if he had a problem. Ward said he had to handle his own problems and not bother his father so Beaver couldn’t tell him about the embarrassing pic. Plus he didn’t want to make June cry. Beaver certainly obsessed over things. Remember when Beaver got the letters saying he owed the modeling company money? He went down and asked if you can go to jail if you don’t pay your bills. Ward said Dickens wrote books about whole families put in debtors prison. Also when Beaver thought that they would put Ward in prison over a library book he asked June would she be upset if someday Ward didn’t come home. Boy such childhood worries.

Right bullies were the biggest problem. My one mile walk home was like walking through the jungle. I would hate having to stay after school and walk home alone. Kids would be waiting for me. Did I ever learn to run.

That whole thing was courtesy of Eddie. He caused a lot of Beaver's worries.
