It occurred to me in a fever dream recently that gorillas were a big part of 1960s TV. Every sitcom seemed to have an episode with a man in a gorilla suit. At the same time, Art Linkletter was all over the tube with his own shows and numerous guest appearances on others, mostly playing himself (not with himself, you pervs). Anyway it seemed just a matter of time before the two biggest trends on TV would collide.
Then it happened. Like when peanut butter and jelly were first combined, like Donny joining forces with Marie, like the Clintons and corruption, it happened. On the evening of January 10, 1966 an episode of The Lucy Show entitled Lucy and Art Linkletter featured both a gorilla and Art Linkletter. There they were...together, on the very same program! The vast potential of the medium was finally realized at last. This episode thrilled grateful viewers and continues to entertain countless generations of fans the world over thanks to the wonder of reruns. I hereby declare Lucy and Art Linkletter to be television's finest moment! |
