Susan Harris Looks Back on "All in the Family"
In the early ’70s, after contributing scripts to "The Courtship of Eddie’s Father" and "The Partridge Family", Susan Harris met Norman Lear, who invited her to write for his hit comedy "All in the Family".
Harris used to bring her toddler son to story meetings in his stroller, and she doesn’t remember any other women writing for the show at that time. It was out of necessity. I gave him his bottle, and we pitched, and it worked. I didn’t take him to every story meeting, but sometimes I simply had to. He probably learned a lot. [Laughs] Then Norman asked if I would be on staff, and I said no because I didn’t want to leave my baby. I just wanted to write at home. I never went to the set, never went to the writers’ room. I don’t think I ever did meet the cast. I was just an episode writer. https://ew.com/tv/2018/10/15/susan-h...-oral-history/ |
