Why did Marie favor Ray over Robert? It was a running gag for the entire series, but they never really gave an explanation for it.

I have wondered if it has anything to do with Robert being born before Frank and Marie got married since marriage is supposed to come first before any sexual activity.

That probably had a lot to do with it...also....Raymond getting married and giving Marie grandchildren....twins no less.

In many cultures, the first-born child is favored. It's funny that the show portrayed the youngest-child favoritism as commonplace. When Robert was commiserating with Debra about her sister, Debra replied that she was the younger one, and that she would've gotten the preferential treatment.

And: Ray was planned for while Robbie was an accident, prompting a shotgun marriage. Shame Robbie had to find it out in the “Good Girl” episode.
