Has anyone been watching the Season 1's ME TV is currently showing? I watched some of the Thanksgiving episode to check on my question, here's the question. Are these shows on ME TV now the same shows that had the music changed on the commercial DVD sets that came out? In the Thanksgiving episode that I did watch I didn't hear the original music or sound effects. If you're familiar with the original background (I esp. always liked that harmonica playing they'd do in season 1 originals) what do you think, are these the "new" versions with the great back music taken out and replaced with the crap sounds?

MeTV is using the DVD set (despite what others say on other threads, they use commercial DVDs on other programs, too). I did some checking on what I recorded off MeTV last year, and they used it then, too.

CBS Television Distribution says on their Syndication Bible website that seasons 1-5 and 11 and 12 have no dubbing inventory. So when they produced DVD sets for seasons 1 and 2, they SHOULD have produced TV prints with original music cues because these seasons ARE being used by MeTV.

HA: Where did you source seasons 1 and 2 from...Nick at Nite? I have another source which appears to be the same as MeTV.

I also would like to know where you got seasons 11 and 12 from...all from Odyssey? I think the Nick at Nite versions were better, but other than MeTV I have only a DVD set and a VHS set taken from Odyssey.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but you seem to be saying the opposite things in your first 2 paragraphs. First you say Me is using the DVD fake music set then in the next paragraph you say Hallmark, Odyssey, and ME(??) all used the original music. I think??

Well, doesn't make sense, anyway, I guess you meant to say that Hallmark and Odyssey used the ORIGINAL music and ME used and is using the new fake music heard in the DVD commercial DVDs.

I'm still watching the last several episodes of season 12 in my weekly Monday viewing, so I'll get to season 1 in a couple months or less. Guess I'll know for sure then. But from my brief looks at the Thanksgiving recent ME TV showing, it looks to me like ME is using the fake music backgrounds you hear in the commercial DVD sets.

My original first recordings of My 3 Sons came from Nick At Nite, Family Channel and TV Land. Then in more recent times I recorded from ME TV. But I've yet to get to the ME TV recordings of Season 1 (I watch my Sons DVDs only once a week), haven't even reached the first time ME TV showed Season 1, a couple years ago. But around 2 months from now I'll finally be watching ME TV's season 1's, then I'll see for myself whether they're using the new music, as I suspect they are. I know when I first saw the commercial DVDs I was greatly disappointed with the new music substitutions, really inferior to the original soundtrack.

All this means is I guess we're lucky there hasn't been any further commercial DVD set releases of seasons 3-12, if there was we'd be getting nothing but fake music versions of all the seasons even when they're shown on TV. Makes me glad I was tapeside back in the '80's and '90 when NICK and Family Channel ran the series.

Yeah, that paragraph is confusing...I tried to edit it.

I'm beginning to think I've never seen an S1 or S2 episode with the original cues.

By the way, I have read somewhere that the music will not be an issue on DVDs beginning in whatever season Frank De Vol began doing all the music (he wrote the main title theme and that's never been a problem, so I believe that statement).

Now, when Katie sings Downtown, or Don Grady sings stuff...that might be an issue...but I doubt we'll see any more DVDs anyway.

Looks like I was editing and adding to my reply to your post while you were replying to my first version of my reply to you. Please re-read my reply to you, I clarified my statement and tried to answer your question when I added to my first reply.

Now I see your last statement, sorry that you never even saw the TV Land showings of My 3 Sons b/w years, they used the original music then. I never have seen Odyssey's versions of Season 1-11, I've only seen their season 12's which I got from somebody else in a trade. Never got the Oddysey channel on my cable.

I will be interested to see your comments on the music on the MeTV versions. There are subtle signs they are using the commercial DVDs. The most obvious clue is that the quality of the MeTV picture is superb, indicating it's the DVD version.

I have a set taken from TV Land Canada, and some limited comparisons I've made makes me think the music is the same as the MeTV/DVD version.

Well, Hazel Anyday, I'm so glad you asked that insightful & excellent question.

Allow me to answer as to my, so far, acquired knowledge. Today I watched the 3rd season 1 episode, (started season 1.1 2 weeks ago, I watch one episode in order each Monday) "Bub In The Ointment". And this episode I am happy to say DID have original music in it, even including one classic Hanna Barbera '60's cartoon music background piece in addition to the personal favorite of mine the original harmonica background playing when a sensitive moment is happening, in this case when Steve explained about the importance of Bub to the family and what he's given up and done for them. GREAT episode, well written and great classic Bub scenes. This has to be one of my favorite b/w 3 Sons shows.

The first episode also had all original background music, now as to the 2nd episode, I think I detected some replacement music, but I won't swear to that till I do a side by side comparison, which I have no plans on doing. I do have somewhat of a life, you know.

I agree with you about not doing agonizing comparisons. My thought is they probably made some limited changes, which I'd probably have to really listen closely to, to detect. Why bother? The DVD episodes look really good, are complete, and even have the car commercial credits at the end. Now, CBS, how about doing the same with the rest of the series?

Now a few years back, when I started watching the commercial set of season 1 DVDs I definitely detected a lot of music changes. My favorite harmonica background was gone, for one. Now, this time I'm watching ME TV season 1's for the first time and I've only gotten up to the 3rd show, so I won't conclude yet that these ME TV versions are music replacement free, I'll have to watch more episode to determine that. But I remember when watching the commercial DVDs that the only episode that didn't have replacement music was episode 1, the rest seemed to have new music. We'll see how the ME TV season 1's fare as I go along.

But the new music they did use on the commercial DVDs was decidedly terrible and very noticeable by me when I watched them. So much so that I couldn't take it anymore, they really ruined the shows, I went back to my original recordings rather than watch any more of those awful replacement music commercial DVDs. They looked great but I couldn't take that cheesy music anymore.

Background music is important to me, I've always since I was a little kid paid attention to the background music in TV shows. So I hope ME TV is not using the commercial DVDs for their broadcast versions. Some of my favorite background music was in Lost In Space, Wild Wild West, Adv. of Superman (George Reeves seasons 1 & 2) Dark Shadows, Mission: Impossible, Laurel & Hardy background music and the great '60's Hanna Barbera cartoons, Yaky Duck, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, etc. including The Flintstones. I love background music when it's perfect as in these shows.

Dark Shadows music is fantastic--the DVD set is great. The only sad thing about Dark Shadows is that a few of the original videotapes disappeared, and all that is left are kinescope copies, in black and white. However, from all I've read, it's fortunate that the majority of the tapes were saved--it was a common practice to "wipe" and reuse tapes. I really dug Angelique.

The Hanna Barbera cartoons were fantastic--let's not forget Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Hokey Wolf and his little buddy whose name I forgot, and Snagglepuss (exit, stage right). Of course, we'll probably never see "Queeks Draw" again, due to Baba Louie. Ah, yes, the Flintstones--the animated version of The Honeymooners.

If we're talking animation let's not forget the great Warner Brothers cartoons--I've painstakingly collected every one of those from the late '40s, '50s, and '60s. The Carl Stalling/Milt Franklyn music scores in those cartoons are incomparable--they scored the music to the action perfectly, and used the Warner Bros. Symphony Orchestra to full advantage.

I knew there was a reason why I love Quick Draw McGraw so much. Quick Draw cartoons are some of the laugh out loud funniest cartoons I've seen recently. I've been watching classic toons from the '50's and '60's over the past couple years, toons that I remember the last time I saw them was as a kid in the '60's. Guess I'm reliving my past in a way.

I watched the Quick Draw toons again for the first time in decades about 6 months ago and I literally laughed out loud with every toon. The mispronunciations, the characters, the goofiness of the voices. Just plain funny. Now, not many toons have that effect on me anymore (though I thought they were all funny as a kid), but Quick Draw is still really funny.

So, it's politically incorrect, good I'll watch them again and laugh even louder. Political Correctness is just a harmless sounding term liberals use for censorship. What libs feign to be offensive the rest of us normal folks are supposed to bow down and go along with their evil minded scheme. This is yet another rule libs have set up I'm extremely happy to break every chance I get. Censorship is to be disdained no matter how sweet and innocent the term is used to disguise it. Don't fall into their trap. Laugh at them with pride.

I really need to get hold of Quick Draw--I haven't seen him in years!

Yeah, the arbiters of PC have banished him, along with Speedy Gonzalez.

I was just reading about him on Wikipedia--I forgot all about El Kabong! Hilarious! To think all these HB cartoons were shown on TV every day, now they're a rarity. All of Quick Draw was written by Michael Maltese, of Warner Bros. fame (he was Chuck Jones' writer).

Evidently there are only 4 episodes of the show on DVD. I need to order them!

By the way, Hokey Wolf's sidekick was Ding a ling (Ding boy).

Another great HB cartoon is Top Cat.

There was a website that used to have a whole lot of old cartoons on it you could watch for free. Luckily I recorded many toons from them with my DVD recorder when I had the chance, since then the website, naturally, closed down. But even before I found that website I found a Sellers website called retrotvmemories.com that sold Quick Draw toons and a whole lot of other neat old shows, here's that website:

I never ordered anything from them, so I can't vouch for them, but they've been around a while and they're still there. They charge $15 for all Quick Draw toons, 45 toons all together, that's not too bad. Even if they're crooks you're only out $15. So, you might want to buy them. They have other stuff I'm tempted to buy from them too. I'd start by buying one or 2 items if they're good then I'd buy more.

The funny thing about Quick Draw, if you read further on Wikipedia, is that Warners was going to release the cartoons, I think around 12 years ago. Then they suddenly stalled, claiming they had problems with the condition of the masters (needing remastering, they said--huh?, they always need to be remastered!), plus the music being from the Capitol music library (the same as My Three Sons). I think the real story is PC, especially since they managed to release Yogi Bear and the blue dog (HH).

You know when I read over my recent post about my answer to myself about background music, I see I rather awkwardly worded what I meant to say. I meant to say I had just watched Season 1, the third episode from season 1, BUB IN THE OINTMENT. The way I worded it it looked like I was talking about a 3rd Season show, not a first season show.

Anyway, YES, in that episode 1.3 Bub In Ointment, you definitely hear a background song both Hanna Barbera and also Dennis The Menace all used. Wish I could hum it for you.

As an example of some of the toons I've watched recently, Wally Gator and Touche Turtle. I'm sorry to say I didn't find these toons funny anymore, though I used to think they were when I was little. But some, still for me, really good ones are Yakky Duck, Augie Doggie, Bullwinkle (very clever with lots of adult jokes that as kids we never got) also Deputy Dog (very funny and different) and especially Huckleberry Hound very funny and a little less so but still very good Yogi Bear. All of them still really funny and entertaining. Snaggle Puss & Peter Potomas I'm sorry to say were in the no longer funny category for me though. Also liked at least some of the Snooper & Blabber toons. I'm not familiar with Hokey Wolf though, maybe this was a toon of the '70s past my childhood days which were the '60's. In keeping also with tradition I watch these toons just the way I used to, every Saturday as I eat breakfast. Thank the Lordy for DVDs.

I meant to say I had just watched Season 1, the third episode from season 1, BUB IN THE OINTMENT. The way I worded it it looked like I was talking about a 3rd Season show, not a first season show. Anyway, YES, in that episode 1.3 Bub In Ointment, you definitely hear a background song both Hanna Barbera and also Dennis The Menace all used. Wish I could hum it for you. As an example of some of the toons I've watched recently, Wally Gator and Touche Turtle. I'm sorry to say I didn't find these toons funny anymore, though I used to think they were when I was little. But some, still for me, really good ones are Yakky Duck, Augie Doggie, Bullwinkle (very clever with lots of adult jokes that as kids we never got) also Deputy Dog (very funny and different) and especially Huckleberry Hound very funny and a little less so but still very good Yogi Bear. All of them still really funny and entertaining. Snaggle Puss & Peter Potomas I'm sorry to say were in the no longer funny category for me though. Also liked at least some of the Snooper & Blabber toons. I'm not familiar with Hokey Wolf though, maybe this was a toon of the '70s past my childhood days which were the '60's. In keeping also with tradition I watch these toons just the way I used to, every Saturday as I eat breakfast. Thank the Lordy for DVDs.
