I'm talking of course about Mark Chapman, who has spent 38 years incarcerated in the Attica Correctional Facility after the fatal shooting on December 8, 1980. In the next few days his tenth application for parole will be considered, having been denied on all nine previous occasions. His wife, a devout Christian, has stood by him. Well they both killed famous people but one has been let out after an extensive incarceration and the other hasn't.

I don't know whether he was in a psychosis in December 1980. I don't think that's the case now as he told the parole board in 2016 that his crime was "premeditated, selfish and evil." In 2010 they gave two reasons for not releasing him, namely that "release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community." This suggest to me that they thought he had not served long enough, or they were hiding behind that reason in sensing the public outrage were he to be released. The second reason suggests that they might think he was a reoffending risk.

You do realize President Reagan didn't die after John Hinckley Jr. shot him right? He survived for several years after that to serve two terms as President of The United States.

Yes sorry Ed you're quite right. Does that make a difference in the sentencing and release date of the individuals concerned?

It makes a definite difference in sentencing which I think is crazy. If you shoot someone meaning to kill them, the crime is the intent, not how good a shot you are.

Chapman should have been released right after he murdered John Lennon. He wouldn't have made it ten feet before someone killed him. Now, he might be able to sneak off without getting whacked. He'll either die in prison or some dopey liberal parole panel will feel sorry for him when he's old and let him out. Murderers (and attempted murderers) should be executed timely. That would be a true deterrent and ensure they couldn't commit another violent crime.

It does seem astonishing that the Tennessee guy who murdered the little girl has been on Death Row since 1986, whether you agree with the death penalty or not. It also seems strange as an outsider that some states have the death penalty and others don't, but then I suppose that's democracy at the local level.
