3rd Rock from the Sun actress Elmarie Wendel has died aged 89, her family confirmed.

Her daughter J.C. paid tribute to her actress mum, calling her "a great mom and a badass dame."

Elmarie played Mrs. Mamie Dubcek, the Solomon family's landlord in 3rd Rock, who often helped them out with romantic issues. She iwas in a whopping 96 of the NBC sitcom's 139 episodes.

She is also known for her voice role as Aunt Grizelda in The Lorax and factory worker Gina Sorenstam in George Lopez.

Her daughter J.C. Wendel is also an actress and announced her mother's death on Instagram using a 3rd Rock publicity picture.

Jim Beaver, who played Happy Doug on 3rd Rock From the Sun, paid tribute: "I've just heard from her daughter J.C. that my friend and colleague from 3rd Rock From the Sun, Elmarie Wendel, has died,"

Beaver wrote. "She was raucous, funny, endearing and terribly, terribly sweet. Goodnight, Mrs. Dubcek, wherever you are."

Elmarie was born on a farm in Iowa and spent her childhood traveling with her musical parents and dancing with her sisters in and around the Midwest in club and concert hall venues before heading to New York.

She starred in theatre productions before getting onto TV. A national touring company of Annie took her to Los Angeles, where she auditioned for her famous role in 3rd Rock.

3rd Rock ran from 1996 to 2001 on NBC. Her last listed work was a voice over for 2015 video game Fallout.
