The VMAs losing relevance is quite simple, it's partially due to the prevalence of the internet. Simple put, award shows feel less important thanks to social media, and therefore artists invest less time and money. Also, and this is quite possibly the biggest elephant in the room, MTV no longer plays music videos and music acts these days that will be featured are dreadful.
