Hello,
I'm looking for information about the UM episode that originally aired on Feb. 14, 1990. I remember UM doing a segment on the unexplained death of police officer Steve Sandlin, of Mountainair, New Mexico. Based on a quick search of the Episode Guide on this site, I believe this was probably the air date of the episode about him, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know? If this is the episode, I'm interested in finding out how to get a copy of the transcript or the video. This particular episode was rerun on July 11, 1990. Thanks! koalalbs |

Steve Sandlin, 21 years old when he was found dead in the police station on May 7th, 1988. I am convinced Sandlin was murdered. He was murdered most likely because he actually did his job and knew too much about the drug trafficking in the area and who was doing what. So they killed him to shut him up. It is sad about Sandlin because he seemed like a good person and an energetic guy with a long law enforcement career ahead of him. It seemed like it was something he had always wanted to do was be a police officer. It seems to me that Chief Carson was covering up something. He most certainly knew more than what he was telling. You can tell Carson wasnt fond of Sandlin. Carson telling Sandlin not to do his job? Carson basically admitted he had told Sandlin he was writing too many tickets and to take it easy. I think that Carson ripped into Sandlin. I dont think Sandlin would claim to his girlfriend that he had been yelled at by Chief Carson unless it happened. There was also eyewitness reports that Carson was sitting outside of the police station shortly before Sandlin was shot. Carson just talked about Sandlin like he thought Sandlin was immature. How Carson claimed that Sandlin liked to play with his gun and either accidently shot himself or killed himself because he was pissed off over an argument. There was also the planted marijuana. I would hope an agency besides the Mountair police was investigating Sandlin's death. Sandlin did his job and he was killed because of it. Sandlin was new to the job and community and wasnt comfortable with slezy people and didnt let them get away with stuff.

I am surprised more people havent stated their opinions on this case. It is obvious that Sandlin was murdered. I dont buy Chief Carson's suicide theory. Why would S andlin kill himself? Because he had an argument with Chief Carson and was depressed? Give me a break. I dont buy the accident theory from Carson either. I also find it to be a coincidence that Sandlin died the day after he was questioned by New Mexico state attorney general's office investigators about the Mountair police department possibly mishandling evidence.

I believe Sandlin was murdered as well. I would doubt it's suicide. Personally, I wouldn't completely rule out the accident scenario, however. Reportedly, he had a tendency to play with his gun. However, if I was forced to bet money, I would bet that he was murdered.
