TV Meredith Vieira's "25 Words or Less" Renewed for 2 More Seasons

Meredith Vieira to Host "25 Words or Less" Game Show for Summer Run on Fox TV Stations
by Nellie Andreeva
July 11, 2018

Meredith Vieira, former longtime host of the syndicated "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", has been tapped to host and produce "25 Words or Less", a new celebrity/civilian game show that is getting a three-week summer trial run on several Fox Television stations.

Set to debut August 6, the half-hour show has a strong celebrity backing: It’s a collaboration of Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Mary McCormack, Michael Morris, Bruce Sterten — creator of the board games 25 Words or Less and Taboo — and John Quinn, who serves as showrunner.

The most popular game shows are often defined by their iconic hosts — that’s why we are so excited to have Meredith host 25 Words or Less,” said Stephen Brown, EVP Programming and Development at Fox TV Stations.

As host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Meredith became the longest-standing female game show host in history. In everything she does, she brings humor, intelligence and an overall sense of fun that we think will make this a great game show series.

"25 Words or Less" pits two teams comprised of celebrities and civilians against each other in a fast-paced word game with a top prize of $10,000. In the beginning rounds of the game, after a frenzied bidding session, one team member provides clues to two partners to help them guess a list of five words using fewer than 25 clue words.

In the final round, the contestant who has earned the most points has 60 seconds to get his partners to guess 10 words using only 25 words or less.

I’m so excited to host this game,” Vieira said. “It’s fun, fast and forces contestants to choose their words carefully. Add in celebrities, you’ve got a party!

This show started its life as a game we played in our living room with our best friends, and that’s the spirit we’ve all tried to capture,” said executive producers Mary McCormack and Michael Morris. “Meredith is like the friend we always wanted in our living room with us. She’s warm, funny, whip-smart and so talented.

Added executive producers Kudrow and Bucatinsky: “We’ve always been big fans of Meredith Vieira and her ability to bring a sense of fun into all that she’s done. We are so excited to have her playing with us on 25 Words or Less.

"25 Words or Less" will air on Fox-owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Orlando and Charlotte.

This is the second consecutive year that the Fox Stations are testing game show formats over the summer, following "IWitness" and "Punchline", which had limited runs last year.

"25 Words or Less" Game Show Hosted by Meredith Vieira Set For Fall 2019 Launch on Fox TV Stations
by Nellie Andreeva
November 26, 2018

Another syndicated daily program has landed a permanent slot on the Fox TV Stations after a summer test run.

"25 Words or Less", a celebrity/civilian game show hosted and produced by Meredith Vieira, former longtime host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, will return to the Fox TV Stations in fall 2019 after a three-week run on several Fox stations this past summer.

The series, which has been cleared in 40% of the country, has a strong celebrity backing: it is a collaboration of Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Mary McCormack, Michael Morris, Bruce Sterten — creator of the board games 25 Words or Less and Taboo — and John Quinn, who serves as showrunner.

"25 Words or Less" pits two teams comprised of celebrities and civilians against each other in a fast-paced word game with a top prize of $10,000. In the beginning rounds of the game, after a frenzied bidding session, one team member provides clues to two partners to help them guess a list of five words, using fewer than 25 clue words.

In the final round, the contestant who has earned the most points has 60 seconds to get his partners to guess 10 words using only 25 words or less.

I don’t need 25 words to say how excited I am to host this fabulous game. Everyone will love playing along,” Vieira said.

Added Frank Cicha, SVP Programming at Fox TV Stations, “We’re pulling for a hit here, because it feels like 25 shows or more since there’s been one in syndication.

25 Words Or Less is actually gonna debut on the ABC station in my area this fall and it's gonna replace Who Wants To Be A Millionaire weekday mornings at the 11AM PT timeslot that Who Wants To Be A Millionaire used to have starting September 16th. I like Meredith Veira and so glad that she has become a Comeback Kid due to hosting this show. I think I might give an episode of 25 Words Or Less a try when it debuts to see if I love it because if I like it I might have a new morning game show to watch

Hi, Bestie. I don't like Meredith. I think she ruined WWTBAM. But I hope this show is a goo one.

I saw the first episode for I was curious and the show reminds of the old game show Name That Tune. I can name the tune in 15 notes. I think Kathy Lee Glifford had her start on NTT. To be honest, 25 words or less for me will be 25 games or less. I didn't care for it.

I thought I would like 25 Words more, but it is just ok. While I wouldn't rule out occasionally watching it, 25 Words is not a show I would make a priority.

Weak weak weak is how I describe 25 Words Or Less and I decided to watch an episode just to see what the hype was about this morning and I don't know how on earth this game show made it to the air. When the episode first began it seemed like it was gonna be a nice game show but as the game went on I found that 25 Words Or Less is a knock-off of Password and what it seems is that the game is impossible to win by having the celebrities and the contestants trying to guess words that are hard and I don't think anyone can guess words in 25 seconds. Meredith Veira may be a Comeback Kid but I don't think this show is tailor-made for Meredith and she seems to be having fun rather than hosting 25 Words Or Less. Why I think this show was made was to make celebrity game shows popular again but I don't think 25 Words Or Less will last and will be not renewed for a second season

It's great news that 25 Words or Less has been renewed for a second season. When the show was tested on the Fox owned station in Minneapolis, my late girlfriend and I would watch it and we both enjoyed it immensely. To me, it's one of the best game shows of the decade since it's a hybrid of Password, Pyramid and the Bid-a-Note segment of Name That Tune and more important, the home audience can play along. Though they show the word on the screen, the home viewer like me can shout at the screen what would be a great clue.

Add an outstanding host in Meredith Viera, who also produces the show and celebrity guests who play the game well and there's a potential for a long running hit.

Good to know that it's a hit, but it needs changes:

1. A "no rhyme/no antonym" rule will help IMMENSELY.

2. in the "stacker" round, require contestants to choose at least one of each color.

This program could had been better off without the profanity I had heard in some of its broadcasts (note: some of them also had sounds often used to censor certain forms of profanity in broadcasting).

I give Meredith and her crew for continuing on with the show with the Corona virus situation, but I didn't care for the show and slim chance I will be tuning just to see the basement.
