So in "Running" as Cindy and Sue Ann get into fight mode, Sue Ann accuses Cindy of tripping her and Cindy retorts:
"Well if you hadn't have galloped in front of me, 'Spectacular Bid', it wouldn't have happened!" Because of Cindy calling out the name of an obviously well-known racehorse from the 1970s, all my life I grew up assuming Spectacular Bid was a Triple Crown winner---but he wasn't! Thanks to my research I now know he tried, but failed in the 3rd race, the Belmont Stakes. What if I had been on "Jeopardy!" and got a question about a 1970s Triple Crown winner, and said "Who was Spectacular Bid?" Thanks a lot, Cindy! ![]() There was a Triple Crown winner '78, "Affirmed". So they could have changed her line to: "Well if you hadn't have galloped in front of me, 'Affirmed', it wouldn't have happened!" but it just doesn't have the same "oomph" to it.

Yes, Spectacular Bid "only" won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
But maybe that's exactly what Cindy was hinting at: a horse that wins two races in a row, but comes up short in the third race. Sue Ann had won the race two years in a row, and this would be her third race... |
