Bathrobes and Slippers

I have noticed that in most sitcoms of the BB era the entire family will automatically put on bathrobes and slippers when they get up at night for anything, they even keep the bathrobes lying across their beds for quick access. I've seen this on BB, "My Three Sons, "The Partridge Family", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", and "Rhoda", just to name a few that come to mind.

Question: Was this the norm and my family was just hopelessly out of it, or was this a sitcom thing because the censors or whoever decides these things thought it would be inappropriate to show the family walking around in pajamas? The female kids in our family, including me, had what we called house coats (like the quilted, button up things the Brady girls wore to Marcia's slumber party) and slippers, but we didn't put them on whenever we got out of bed, we used them more like lounge wear after we had a bath or whatever.

Did your family do the sitcom thing and put on a robe and slippers every time you got up in the night? I'm just curious, it seems like such a tedious thing to do, especially because half the time the sitcom people are wakened by "something that went bump in the night" and you would think their safety would be their first thought, not making sure their robe sash was tied, lol.

I had noticed the same thing, That bathrobes were always put on when anyone gets our to bed. I figured it must be censors too. Most people would not put all of this on to get up at night.

I don't put my bathrobe on to use the bathroom, but I would if I was walking downstairs for something.

for sure it depends if you sleep nude or not LOL

but many sit coms females sleep with their bra's on LOL LOL

I don't put my robe on for EVERYTHING, but I do if I'm going to be up for a while..... I also put mine across the bed lol

What I find more strange about sitcom ppl, when they are in bed at night and need to talk to each other, WHY do they ALWAYS have to turn the light on?!

I get it, from a TV perspective, I guess they think the audience would find it odd to be looking at a dark screen listening to them talk, but it always looks so silly for someone to want to say ONE thing to the person in bed with them and they have to turn the light on to say it.

Wasn't it mostly the teenagers & adults who used the robes? The smaller children didn't use them as much because you'd often see them in their pajamas. I suppose the use of robes had to do with modesty.

I still use a flannel bathrobe, house slippers & pajamas as bedclothes, checking outside the house in the morning, & a Turkish towel bathrobe & rubber sandals getting out of the tub. I guess I am old fashioned, but can tell you it was common in the early 70s, & definitely prior to that.
