Fans Get to Decide Cast on MTV and Facebook's "The Real World" Revival
MTV Launches MTV Studios with "Daria", "Made", "Real World" & "Æon Flux" Revivals
by Nellie Andreeva June 21, 2018 MTV is ramping up production operations and getting into producing programming for other buyers with the launch of MTV Studios. It will be focused largely on developing and producing reboots, revivals and spin-offs of series from MTV’s library of more than 200 young adult titles in addition to new shows, predominantly unscripted. "Daria & Jodie", "The Real World" and "Æon Flux" all are being pitched to streaming platforms like Hulu, Netflix and Apple. "The Real World" is being done through MTV Studios and Bunim-Murray. MTV Studios’ initial slate includes: - "Daria & Jodie", a reimagining of MTV’s 1990s feminist series "Daria", from writer Grace Edwards (Inside Amy Schumer) - An update of the Emmy-winning coming-of-age unscripted series "Made" - A live-action remake of MTV’s animated sci-fi series "Æon Flux", from "Teen Wolf" creator Jeff Davis - A return of the network’s groundbreaking reality series "The Real World" with Bunim/Murray Productions MTV did consider rebooting "The Real World" for the network before opting to go to SVOD. “We love the franchise, but what is so special about it is the purity of it. It didn’t have gimmicks, it didn’t have tricks, it didn’t have all the extra bells and whistles that the days unscripted required to work on cable,” MTV president Chris McCarthy said. “You have a whole different generation of young people that are growing up that didn’t experience cable in the way you and I did. And so we’re able to go and actually retell that story, updated of course, with new characters, new tensions, new real-life issues, but still stay totally pure to the clean idea of what Real World was without having to basterdize it in order to make it work for traditional cable.” https://deadline.com/2018/06/mtv-stu...ls-1202414792/ |

I don't think that The Real World will ever be like it was in the first few seasons back in the '90s. Ultimately, it seemed like the cast members realized that the crazier and more combative they were, the more attention they got. It didn't matter how alcoholic and/or openly racist, sexist, homophobic, and violent you could be as long as you got more camera time.

The Real World isn't on MTV anymore? I guess I could see that as the show kind of went down the past few years. You think there will be a revival of Beavis and Butthead?

"The Real World" Heads to Facebook Watch after Landmark Deal with MTV Studios & Bunim/Murray
by Peter White October 17, 2018 "The Real World" is heading to Facebook after MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions struck a deal with the social media giant. The show will launch on Facebook Watch as part of a landmark deal with MTV Studios and the Banijay-owned indie. This comes after Deadline revealed in June that "The Real World" was being rebooted for a digital platform. The commission was announced by Facebook’s Matthew Henick and Paresh Rajwat at Mipcom, where the pair were giving a keynote address. They were joined on stage by Chris McCarthy, President, MTV. Facebook Watch is launching three seasons of the show, one in the U.S., one in Mexico and one in Thailand. Production is underway for a spring 2019 release. “The Real World made history as the world’s first original reality show and trailblazing social experiment – and we’re thrilled to reboot the show for today’s audiences – representing and amplifying the real life, real people, real places and real social tensions of each country,” said Henick, Head of Content Planning and Strategy, Facebook. “MTV’s The Real World helped to define a generation and created a new genre of television with a simple yet powerful idea of connecting people from wildly divergent backgrounds to find common ground on the issues that often divided them. By partnering with Facebook Watch and BMP, we have the opportunity to impact culture and create a new genre of television all over again, while engaging the next generation of content consumers around the world,” added MTV’s McCarthy. https://deadline.com/2018/10/the-rea...ay-1202483750/ |

Facebook Watch & MTV’s "Real World" Reboot Final Cast Members to be Determined by Fans
by Dino-Ray Ramos February 26, 2019 This is the true story of how one social media platform partnered with MTV to bring "The Real World" back to the masses. Facebook Watch and MTV Studios are launching the previously announced reimagined version of the old school reality series. As an added bonus, fans will be able to choose the seventh and final cast members for the new seasons via Facebook. The Facebook community will play a key role in casting three reimagined seasons of the series. Yes, you heard that right. You will be able to choose who will be part of all the roommate drama, passionate arguments about social issues and scandalous hot tubbing. For each of the versions, taking place in the U.S., Mexico and Thailand, one of the cast members will be picked through Facebook poll results. Starting this week, fans will be able to vote through The Real World‘s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/realworld/. The in-video casting polls will be available for one week each starting with the U.S. followed by Mexico and Thailand on March 11. Prior to the series premiere of the reimagined version, fans will also get to re-live some classic, buzzworthy moments and help pick favorite full seasons of "The Real World" for release on Facebook Watch. Voting starts on the show’s Facebook page March 4 for a three week period. The seasons with the most votes will be announced on March 25 and will be available to view on Facebook Watch in the lead up to the new season premiere this spring. https://deadline.com/2019/02/faceboo...ns-1202565223/ |
