TV Starz' "Vida" to End after 3 Seasons

"Vida" Renewed for Season 2 at Starz (Exclusive)
by Lesley Goldberg
June 12, 2018

To little surprise, Starz is sticking with critical favorite "Vida". The premium cable network has renewed the half-hour drama from creator Tanya Saracho for a second season.

A return date and episode count has not yet been determined.

The news comes days after the series, which focuses on two Mexican-American sisters from the East Side of Los Angeles who learn about their mother's sexual identity, wrapped its first season.

"Vida" bowed May 6 to stellar reviews and is certified fresh with a 100 percent rating among critics on RottenTomatoes.com. Since its premiere, "Vida" has grown 171 percent to earn the largest Hispanic audience composition for a premium series this year.

"Vida has delivered on its promise of attracting a young, new Latinx audience to the Starz platform, as we had hoped it would, and we are pleased to be able to announce a second season of the series,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said Tuesday in a statement.

With these new episodes, Tanya and her team now have the opportunity to take audiences even deeper into the lives and community of the Hernandez sisters, and we look forward to bringing the next chapter of their story to life.

"Vida" Renewed for Season 3 at Starz
by Dave Nemetz
May 31, 2019

Starz just gave "Vida" fans a reason to celebrate this weekend: The half-hour drama has been renewed for a third season, less than a week after its Season 2 premiere.

It is a rarity in television today to have a series earn this level of critical praise for two consecutive seasons and spark cultural conversation in the way that Vida has,” Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch said in a statement. “We are proud to continue to tell this story with Tanya and the incredible cast and crew she has assembled.

"Vida" to End after Season 3
by Rosy Corder
March 18, 2020

The Starz drama "Vida" will conclude its run after three seasons, it was announced on Wednesday.

Series creator Tanya Saracho shared a message of gratitude in a farewell letter released by the cabler.

Quote:
When I began this journey three and a half years ago, I never dreamed that by the end of the process I’d be so wholly changed — mind, body, and spirit — and that I’d be standing so strongly in my abilities to run and create a TV show the way it should have always been created: By us.

When I started this, the landscape was a bleak one for Latinx representation. In the television landscape, the narratives about us were few and far between and were stuck on stereotypical. And I had only heard of one Latina showrunner who’d been allowed to run a show solo. Also for brown queers, there was truly no representation.

This goodbye is too bittersweet for words. I’d be lying if I said I’m not sad about not getting back into that magical writers room to keep crafting our story. But after all, I got to tell the exact story I wanted to tell, exactly how I wanted to tell it, and that is rare in this industry. I leave steeped in gratitude.

Thankful to Starz for not just allowing VIDA to happen, but for being great co-parents as we raised her together. And grateful for the collaborators whose careers we were able to launch: Latinx cinematographers, writers, actors — almost entirely female — who are now out there and in demand.

What a beautiful family we built. And what a beautiful show.
