Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Danny Kirwan has died at the age of 68.

The band confirmed his death in a statement on Facebook and paid tribute to the “true legacy” of the music he wrote as part of the band.

Mr Kirwan joined Fleetwood Mac when he was 18 after being recruited by Mick Fleetwood.

The guitarist left the group in 1972 amid a deteriorating relationship with his fellow members.

After leaving Fleetwood Mac, he embarked on a solo career but chose to leave the music industry towards the end of the 1970s.

A statement on the band's Facebook page said: “Today was greeted by the sad news of the passing of Danny Kirwan in London, England.

“Danny was a huge force in our early years. His love for the Blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years.

“Danny’s true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac that has now endured for over fifty years.

“Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!”
