Today was the first day of Canada's annual TV upfronts where the Canadian TV networks and specialty channels announce their fall lineups highlighted by new acquisitions from the US networks which will form a key part of their primetime lineups for the fall. The one exception to this is the network which usually kicks off the proceedings each year and that is the CBC:
CBC Canada's oldest network will feature a lot of returning favourites in both comedy and drama. These series will include the long-running Dragons' Den (Season 13), Murdoch Mysteries (Season 12), Schitt's Creek (Season 5), This Hour Has 22 Minutes (S26), and When Calls The Heart, which begins its 4th season on June 17! Moving to the winter of 2019 will be a series that is also big with US viewers, Heartland (S12). Among the new shows will be one new comedy, Cavendish, which will also premiere in midseason. It's about two brothers who return to their hometown to care for their sick father, but they receive little help from a very strange group of townspeople. Another new show that sounds interesting to me is a spinoff of the popular reality show Canada's Smartest Person, where people from all over Canada compete in a series of quizzes and games to see who really is Canada's smartest person. This fall will feature a new version called Canada's Smartest Person Junior, where the contestants will be between 8-12 years old. Press Release SCHEDULE PRIMETIME BROADCAST SCHEDULE CBC’s 2018-19 primetime broadcast schedule is as follows: All series will also be available to stream on theCBC TV App and at cbc.ca/watch . (For Newfoundland and Labrador, please add one half-hour later for all times) MONDAYS 8 PM – MURDOCH MYSTERIES *Season 12*(FALL/WINTER) 9 PM – FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES *Season 2* (FALL)/CORONER *NEW SERIES* (EARLY WINTER)/ STREET LEGAL *NEW SERIES* (LATE WINTER) 10 PM – THE NATIONAL TUESDAYS 8 PM – STILL STANDING *Season 4*(NEW TO FALL)/ KIM’S CONVENIENCE *Season 3* (NEW TO WINTER) 8:30 PM – THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES *Season 26* (FALL/WINTER) 9 PM – BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW *Season 3* (NEW TO FALL)/ SCHITT’S CREEK *Season 5* (WINTER) 9:30 PM – WORKIN’ MOMS *Season 3* (WINTER) 10 PM – THE NATIONAL WEDNESDAYS 8 PM – THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW *Season 2*(EARLY FALL)/ CANADA’S SMARTEST PERSON JUNIOR *NEW SERIES* (LATE FALL)/ BURDEN OF TRUTH *Season 2* (EARLY WINTER)/ DIGGSTOWN *NEW SERIES* (LATE WINTER) 9 PM – VANITY FAIR *NEW SERIES*(EARLY FALL)/MR. Not so for the group of channels who will step up tomorrow which are collectively known as IndieNET. These include CHCH, which over the last year has featured some great retro series in their lineup. Keep it here to see what they have in store for this fall. |

Has there been any news on if Heartland is going past season 12 or ending there? Moving to midseason (if it has always started in fall before) does not sound like a good sign, but that is also when their only new comedy premieres. Some of their shows in the 26+ seasons sound like quite the long running evergreens but I am guessing most of them are unscripted.

According to the CBC press release, the only series that is scheduled to begin its final season is Mr. D. The other long-running series, including Heartland, should continue for at least 2 more years. If that sounds like good news to you, what you are about to read over the next few days will make this seem like child's play. YES TV Yesterday's upfronts belonged to a small group of regional channels known as IndieNET which include CHCH, which I will spotlight this weekend, and YES TV which I will feature today. Last year, YesTV brought back a group of old black and white classics which included The Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith, Ozzie and Harriet, and The Lucy Show, and aired their public domain episodes in the early afternoon. This season, as I might have guessed, those shows have been moved to the late night hours, replacing the BUZZR game shows that have been airing there for the last 2 years. What will come on in their place is the first of a lot of changes that have been made to the schedule. The fun begins with a pair of shows that are in keeping with Yes TV's standing as a family-friendly religious station. At 2 pm, there is Highway To Heaven starring Michael Landon followed by Touched By An Angel at 3. Then the judges take over the screen for the rest of the afternoon (will this madness never end???) with Hot Bench at 4 and 4:30 and Judge Judy at 5 and later at 6:30. The rest of the schedule is filled with a few surprises (to say the least) and it looks like this: 2:00 pm Highway To Heaven 3:00 Touched By An Angel 4:00 Hot Bench 4:30 Hot Bench 5:00 Judge Judy 5:30 Everybody Loves Raymond 6:00 Frasier 6:30 Judge Judy 7:00 Wheel Of Fortune 7:30 Jeopardy 9:00 Blue Bloods (Sept.)/Judging Amy (Jan. 2019) 10:30 Little Mosque On The Prairie 1 to 3 am - Various programs, featuring public domain episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Adventures Of Ozzie and Harriet, plus the following: Highway To Heaven, Chicago Hope, Doogie Howser MD, and The Wonder Years. That's a lot to pack in for a two-hour time slot! How and where they all fit in was not made clear in the media kit which contained the official schedule but it will eventually be sorted out in time for the fall. The full details can be found here: YES TV Sales Kit YES TV Ontario Schedule - Fall 2018 YES TV Ontario Schedule - Winter 2019 YES TV Alberta Schedule - Fall 2018 YES TV Alberta Schedule - Winter 2019 New and Returning Shows Overall, this may not be the best or the worst schedule they've ever had, but it is certainly the strangest I've ever seen. Now if you thought that was fun, wait until you see what CHCH in Hamilton has in store for the fall. I have been trying desperately to get their schedule for the last couple of days, and I still hope to have something by Saturday at the earliest. If you want to know why I'm already excited about it, take a look at this short video clip from last night's IndieNET Upfronts presentation in downtown Toronto and prepare to be very amazed!! "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched By an Angel" are exactly the type of shows I expect to be on YESTV. I'm glad to see that "Frasier" is going to air somewhere again, and all those late night options look good.
As for CHCH, it looks like they are really embracing "retro," which is great. I've been enjoying "Bewitched" and "Barney Miller" and "Soap," and I loved seeing "MTM Show" and "Newhart" and "The Bob Newhart Show." It's been so great to see those shows back on TV after so many years without much retro airing at all. Thanks for the update. Looking forward to more. |

I'm glad you're enjoying this as well as I am. This has been long overdue and it's been well worth waiting for. Hopefully other channels begin to take notice and provide a little competition. The official schedule still isn't ready but I can tell you what to expect, just not when they'll be on. Confirmed to launch in Sept. of 2018 along with the return of Who's The Boss? will be the following: I Love Lucy Hogan's Heroes Mission Impossible Happy Days Laverne & Shirley Mork & Mindy Cheers Taxi Mary Tyler Moore Lost In Space Those of you who like to do the fantasy network lineups should have a lot of fun guessing where these shows will fit in, almost as much fun as the viewers will get from watching them! |

The Canadian upfronts continue this week as Canada's major networks and cable companies announce their fall primetime schedules for 2018-19. First up today was Rogers Media which owns CITY TV, Sportsnet, and the multilingual OMNI channels.
CITY TV CITY has made a lot of changes to their lineup this season, placing at least one new series on every night of the week, except on Saturday, where Hockey Night In Canada still rules the night. (Why mess with a winner?) The most significant change for me might be the addition of The Simpsons on Sundays at 8, which had been on Global for a very long time. The new acquisitions set to premiere in Sept. are great choices as well. If all goes well in the ratings, they might have ended up with the best new drama series (Manifest) and comedy (Murphy Brown). Other new series to watch for include The Cool Kids, which should fit in nicely on Wed. nights in between Black-ish and Modern Family, with Single Parents and A Million Little Things completing the night. Also coming to CITY will be the sitcom Rel (Don't blink or you'll miss it!) and dramas The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco and The Gifted, a returning series that is new to CITY. CITY TV FALL SCHEDULE 2018-19 MONDAY 8:00 Dancing With The Stars 10:00 MANIFEST (NBC) TUESDAY 8:00 The Gifted 9:00 Lethal Weapon 10:00/10:30 Mom (reruns) WEDNESDAY 8:00 Black-ish 8:30 THE COOL KIDS (FOX) 9:00 Modern Family 9:30 SINGLE PARENTS (ABC) 10:00 A MILLION LITTLE THINGS (ABC) THURSDAY 8:00 Bad Blood 9:00 Mom (new episodes) 9:30 MURPHY BROWN (CBS) 10:00/10:30 Mom (reruns) FRIDAY 8:00 The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (PBS) 9:00 Hell's Kitchen 10:00/10:30 Mom (R) SATURDAY 7:00 Hockey Night In Canada 10:00 Bad Blood SUNDAY 8:00 The Simpsons (From Global) 8:30 Bob's Burgers 9:00 Family Guy 9:30 Rel (Fox) 10:00/10:30 Mom (R) Fall Preview 2018 This could be the most improved primetime fall lineup out of all the Canadian networks, as long as Candice Bergen can stay away from Twitter. Easier said than done! |

I think CHCH will continue to air news in the morning and at 6pm and 11pm. I'd be happy if they dropped the "Judge" shows.
My guess is: 10:00 am - Mission Impossible 11:00 am - Hogan's Heroes 11:30 am - I Love Lucy 03:00 pm - Happy Days 03:30 pm - Laverne & Shirley 04:00 pm - Mork & Mindy 04:30 pm - Taxi 05:00 pm - Cheers 05:30 pm - Mary Tyler Moore Show 11:30 pm - Lost in Space |

The upfronts continue today with presentations by Corus Entertainment, owners of the Global TV network and a large group of specialty channels including ABC Spark, Cartoon Network, CMT, DejaView (no longer a top priority in their organization --- and it shows!), Disney Channel, History, Nickelodeon, Teletoon, and YTV. Today I will look at their main property, the Global TV network.
GLOBAL Unlike CITY, Global made little changes to their fall lineup, adding only 7 new shows to their lineup. One of them was by necessity, since The Simpsons was suddenly taken by CITY after having been a long-time staple of the Global Sunday night schedule. It will be replaced by the new reality series Dancing With The Stars:Juniors. The other major changes will occur on Mondays, where sitcoms The Neighborhood and Happy Together will air at 8 and 8:30, and Tuesdays, which will feature dramas FBI and New Amsterdam. The only other new series to debut in the fall will be the sitcom I Feel Bad on Thursdays at 9:30 after what looks like a strong group of NBC comedies (Superstore, The Good Place, and Will & Grace). Overall, Thursday might be their only good night of the week as I believe that their lineup is the weakest of the Canadian networks. Tomorrow I will show you the strongest group, which will come from CTV. Fall Preview Fall Schedule

Today was the last day of the Canadian upfronts, hosted by Bell Media and its various channels, and it was undoubtedly the most exciting. Bell's top property, CTV, has been Canada's top network for over a decade and today's news is indicative of why that is the case.
CTV Last year, CTV was home to Canada's #1 (Big Bang Theory) and #2 (Young Sheldon) most watched series. Roseanne was third but as we all know she won't be back. Her 8 pm Tuesday slot will be taken by "The Voice" as America searches for a voice louder than hers! CTV's hold on the top spot is so strong that they only added 5 new series to their lineup: The Resident and the new Magnum PI on Mondays, The Rookie on Tuesday, God Friended Me at 8 pm on Sunday, and The Alec Baldwin Show at 10 on Sunday. Another new series, and the only sitcom that was added, The Kids Are Alright, will be on the CTV 2 network in between reruns of The Big Bang Theory which can be seen on CTV weeknights at 7:30 and CTV 2 at 7:00 pm on weekdays. Also to be found 5 days a week will be reruns of The Goldbergs and Seinfeld at 10:00 and 10:30 pm each weekday on CTV 2 except on Thursdays when they will carry NFL Football. One of their long-time channels Comedy Gold was sold last year to a group called WOW Entertainment, which is expected to rebrand it as a children's station later this fall. Four other specialty channels will also get a major rebranding from Bell, with the new names representing the types of programming that will be offered, in what they hope will lead to a new and improved channel group. SPACE will become CTV Sci-Fi, GUSTO will be CTV Life, Bravo (the Canadian version) will be CTV Drama, and the Comedy Network will be (naturally) CTV Comedy. I'm looking forward to that one the most since both Comedy and Comedy Gold were in bad shape programming wise and were in major need of a revamp. Soon, it will happen. Before it does, Bell will offer two other new channels as Video On Demand services free to their customers. They will be called CTV Movies and CTV Vault. Both will feature increased programming content and full seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Community, The Larry Sanders Show, and many other movies and series from CTV's library and that of Sony Pictures Television. So, to sum up, Canada's #1 network will offer the following for this fall: ----Canada's most-watched returning favorite series on primetime on both CTV and CTV 2 ---A complete revamping and new fall schedules for four of their more popular specialty channels ---A new digital platform offering even more content and more variety at no extra cost to consumers This sounds like a very good deal to me. CHCH
The suspense is over! You've waited long enough! Here at long last is the new fall schedule from "Canada's Superstation" CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ont. The Canadian channel that has embraced retro programming in a big way in the last year will now increase their classic shows to almost a full day, with movies taking up most of the primetime and weekend hours. The daytime will be filled with fun and surprises which even I couldn't have imagined. Here it is: 10:00 am I Love Lucy 10:30 Mary Tyler Moore 11:00 Rhoda 11:30 Laverne & Shirley 12:00 pm Hogan's Heroes 12:30 Soap 1:00 Taxi 1:30 Barney Miller 2:00 Mission Impossible 3:00 Lost In Space 4:00 Mork & Mindy 4:30 Who's The Boss? 5:00 Cheers 5:30 Happy Days 7:30 MASH By my count, that's 8 and a half hours of solid shows and I'll probably watch about half of them. There's not much more I can add to this except to say that this was a long time coming for Canadians and it was well worth waiting for! Enjoy!! CHCH 2018 Fall Media Kit Retro Shows page LIVE FEED |

A couple of other "last-minute" fall scheduling notes for Canada's other IndieNET stations:
CHEK in Vancouver will be airing some programs that are found on other IndieNET stations like Yes TV (Wheel Of Fortune, Jeopardy, Blue Bloods, Hot Bench, Judge Judy) and even a couple of classics from CHCH, showing them a full week before CHCH is ready to premiere them for their audience. They would be MASH (of course) and Mary Tyler Moore. Beginning today, they will have MASH on at 5 and 5:30 pm Eastern time (2 and 2:30 in BC) followed by Mary at 6. By my count, that makes about 4 channels that will have MASH on this fall. That's because there are no special "syndication rules" in Canada so you can literally binge watch it whenever you want. Speaking of YesTV, I still haven't quite grasped what they will do with their late-night schedule that I posted earlier this summer. Next week's lineup offers only a slight hint. It begins at 1:00 am with "Chicago Hope" followed by the premiere of "Doogie Howser MD" at 2:00 and "Highway To Heaven" at 2:30. It will remain like that for the entire week except for Thursday the 13th which will have "The Beverly Hillbillies" at 1:00 am and "Little Mosque On The Prairie" at 1:30. That unpredictabilty may last through the whole fall season since there were no official times given for any of the series that will be on at those times, both old and new. I'll post further fall scheduling news later on this page once I find more details. |
