It's a toss up for sure between Cousin Virgil & Ernest T. Bass. I remember Ernest T. going back to school to get some education. That was a funny episode.

Cousin Virgil had no confidence but had an artistic talent. Early Goober was just plain childlike.

Some characters for sure. Maybe, some character flaws?
But low IQs?

All may not have low IQ's, but I doubt that any are the brightest bulb in the chandelier either.

The fun girls. They skipped Skippy when they were handing out brains. Edit--(Oops--Zoneboy got them...)

We'd be better off discussing the characters with the highest IQs.

That wouldn't be any fun.

I loved Malcolm.... he had personality, wit and English charm but maybe a bit naive. Certainly not in a category with Warren and Goober.

I want to add Roger Hanover to the list. That snake who visited Aunt Bee after many years. He was unscrupulous, obnoxious and stupid to mess with Andy.

Didn't Warren have to pass an iq test to enter into the police academy he always mentioned?
Also Malcolm same thing cold stream Guard?

Roger hanover was dumb as a fox. He had to be cunning to survive the street being a con man.

Ernest T. Was mentally ill but actually quite intelligent in some ways. Andy's jail couldn't hold him. He also dated the foxiest girl in Mayberry, the lovely Rowena. If Ken Berry counts, then he is the idiot for letting Jackie Joseph go!

Interesting no one mentioned Barney. He certainly does some idiotic things. He does at times display book learning by reciting poetry and words of wisdom. I guess he's an intelligent imbecile. He'd be a tough one to guess his IQ, but something is definitely off center brain wise.

One thing that Barney was much smarter and wiser than Andy was when it came to women. Barney had no trouble with women. He had Thelma Lou who was gorgeous, plus a lover named Juanita with he maintained a relationship up until the reunion show. He also knew "The Fun Girls" and hooked up with the better looking lady of the pair (but the lady who talked like a truck driver was also sexy in her own way).

Andy had Helen. Yikes.

When Barney is dancing at the end of the one with James Best as the guitar player I’m thinking that man has rhythm. He is so funny outside the jail while Best is wowing the band. Barney did have a way with the women! Love when he tells Rita Shaw as the escaped con “Let’s dance. You’re starting to get to me.”

She says “You’re a doll.”

Andy had Helen!! I agree, Yikes.
