Its become more or less like Jack the Ripper. To many suspects but not enough concrete evidence for anyone to be sure. This is two new candidates in the space of a few months, first Rackstraw now this guy.

Biggest problem with this guy is he looks nothing like the composite drawing. And this is not an EAR situation where the sketches were dubious. The eyewitnesses in this case had a pretty good look at Cooper. The still living one should be able to identify a photo of Cooper taken around the same time. Thats probably the best chance to solve this. There is not enough physical evidence I think to ever prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Cooper chose an inferior parachute to jump with iirc? I doubt an experienced military paratrooper would make the same mistake.

It was more that one of the four chutes they gave him was actually a training chute and would not have opened.

I never understood why he wanted the four parachutes. I would assume a civilian parachute also has a reserve, and is probably similar to load-bearing capacity that a military chute is (that is, a LOT). I think I remember reading something about intending to take hostages or something like that, but that obviously never materialized.

I don't think the dude had any military experience: he clearly didn't check his equipment before he jumped--otherwise, he would almost certainly have identified the training chute. And no paratrooper would've chosen THAT drop site in THOSE weather conditions at THAT speed. Like, I hardly feel it's up for debate. Those things are just not things anyone who has been trained to jump in the military would ever willingly do.

I surmise he either had no idea what he was doing, or had no idea what he was doing and knew he'd be had, so to speak, wherever he landed, and thus chose to commit suicide by jumping from the aircraft.

I used to assume that he had military experience due to the audacity of the crime. It would have taken a lot of brass to do what he did. It is still possible that he did have some sort of background, but it is also very possible that he was just an amateur that made poor choices which ultimately led to his death. Surviving that jump in those conditions is unthinkable for me unless he had some serious training and real world experience in those elements, but even then he would have still risked death anyway the moment he opened that door.
