Well, it usually means my birthday weekend, LOL
But this year...I think it means something more then my birthday. A day of remembrance for everyone who has served our country...weather it's dating back to the Paul Rivere days, or just this past September 11th...A day to thank the Navy, Army, Airforce, Marines, everyone who has helped us and defended us. They fought for our country, and I think the least everyone can do is hang out a flag. ^^^Did that come from me? lol. |

Coming from a Navy Brat, let me say that Karli's answer is right on the money and let me add this. (It's a bit long)
Most Memorial Day's is just like any other day. Infact, prior to this year, most people probably thought "Woohoo, no school and or work" But for me it has always been something different. It was a time to remember all of those that had given their lives in defense of our country so we could be free today. It was a time for our family to get together and tell stories about my Great Uncle Melvin who was killed in WW2. It was a day that my dad would tell us stories about life out on the ship and what some of the things he went through and the friends he had lost along the way. Up until October 2000, I had never known anyone in the military that had been killed while on active duty. I had however been to MANY military funerals of family members who had died of old age or whatever. However, October 2000 was the first time I experienced that anger, shock, and sadness one suffers when somebody you know is killed by terrorists during peace time. I had a friend that was on the USS Cole when it was attacked and all those sailors were killed. Ronnie was a cook on board the Cole. He was loved by many and known to all. The Cole was a close knit group, everybody knew everyone else. They were a family. The thing is, I didn't even know Ronnie was on the Cole. See he had not been on the Cole but a few months. He had been on another ship and I thought he was still on that other ship. I found out about Ronnie by a friend of mine. We were decorating for Haloween and she came outside with a look on her face. She asked me if I knew a guy named Ronchester. I said Ronnie? What about him? I knew from the look on her face. I went running inside and there was Ronnie's picture on the television. They were saying that Ronnie was one of the missing sailors. I was in complete shock and I started crying. The next few days were hard for me. I was relieved when they found his body. I knew it would be easier on his family if they found the body. Going to his funeral was pretty hard on me. It was the first military funeral I had gone to for somebody my age. The following Memorial Day, I went out to Ronnie's gravesite to find I was not the first one there. People had already been there and had put up a bunch of flags and stuff. It was pretty nice to see. This Memorial Day I won't be going to Ronnie's gravesite. I'm spending time with family. This will be a somber time for us because our family was affected by the 9-11 attack. My brother knew SEVERAL people that were killed both in New York and D.C. This will be a year when HE will look back at those fond memories he had of all of his friends and remember. And we, as his family, will be there to support him. I believe this year, there will be more veterans thanked for all of their years of service. If you get the chance, thank one. Thank them for your freedom. Thank them for allowing you to be able to be sitting where you are today. But the most important thing to do is to remember. Remember ALL the horrors that have happened, don't EVER forget them. For, if a generation ever forgets their past, they are just doomed to repeat the same mistakes. So as you go about this Memorial Day to your bar-b-que's or whatever you have planned, just look aroud you and remember all those people that not only founght and came home, but those that fought and gave their lives so you could be standing there doing what you wanted to do. Happy Memorial Day! D |

Normally I go camping Memorial Day weekend but we didnt this year. It is cool at the campground becasue all of the campers and trailers and tents are decked out with flags. So Memeral Day is like an American Flag day to me.

For me, Memorial Day means some much needed rest and relaxation. On Sunday, I will go to several cemetaries where family and loved ones are buried and lay a wreath on their graves, in memorium...
