Default Still baffled about what really happened to the Connors after the season 9 finale...

*SPOILERS*

OK, but who is STILL super confused and baffled about this season 9 finale and what little information that they gave to explain it in the season 10 premiere episode?

I'm one to overthink things, and you may think I'm crazy but I'm going to try and tackle and unwrap what was revealed in the season 9 finale and 10 premiere episode...

So here's what went through my head after the season 9 finale...

So if it was revealed that the tail end of season 8 and all of season 9 was a work a fiction that of Rosanne wrote, where she was writing a fiction inside a work of fiction and depicting it for us on camera, that means the series itself became a work of fiction at one point based on Roseanne's unreliable narrating? This seems to be case then, so at what point in the series did the show became a work of fiction or this "alternative reality" that Roseanne wrote in a script...the end of season 8 when won the lottery? Or was it even much earlier than that? If you remember in the season 9 finale, she mentions that she "fixed" the relationship of Darlene and her boyfriend and Becky and her boyfriend so it was reversed in the way it "really" was. So, since Becky met Mark in season 3, could it be that all of season 3 and beyond was this "alternative reality" that Roseanne had written in a script? Another point to suggest that season 3 and beyond was a work of fiction is that, if you remember, there was a soundbite from the season 2 finale in the season 9 finale, which recaptures how Roseanne was given a desk in the basement to write. If she started writing this work of fiction then, was she showing us reality, "alternative reality," the "reality" of the "alternative reality" (more on this in the next paragraph) or a mix of it from season 3-8 and then it wasn't until season 8-9, that it became the depiction of a full-on untruth of everything we knew about the Connors from the script she was writing?

Now jumping to season 10...

We see the unravel of what has become of the real Connors and learn that Dan is not dead and also, we learn that Dan knows about the script that Roseanne reveals she wrote in season 9. Dan mentions that the script would have been "sold if only you didn't kill off the most interesting character." So, if it was confirmed that it was some kind of TV spec script of Roseanne's "reality" of the "alternative reality," that must mean that like Dan's death, the other things she revealed to have actually happened in reality were also a lie: Roseanne's mom being gay, Jackie being gay, Mark actually loved Darlene and David actually loved Becky. In other words, Roseanne was just playing a cruel joke on the audience and was lying to us some point in the series about the series of events that happened in her life (the alternative reality) and also the "reality" of that "alternate reality" was not true as well. So then why did Roseanne character show us this "alternative reality" if the "reality" of the "alternative reality" was also not true (it couldn't be because Dan died because obviously he is very much alive in season 10)? We may never know or we could just pass it off as a flub on the actual Roseanne who retaliated to execs because she wanted to have full control of her show, whether or not it made sense or not. Also, we may never really know what happened to the Connors between season 8 finale and the season 9 finale.

I doubt they'll explain more about these mysteries because they seemed to have move past in very quickly and just brush it off as a joke, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

The show either lampoons its own past (e.g. the two Beckys) or it overlooks what can cause continuity problems.

It's interesting how season 10 ignores a lot of what happened between seasons 4 and 8.

Including the season 9 finale, which was - at the time - the initial attempt to do the same thing.

But general audiences remember it's Becky/Mark and Darlene/David, much less care (almost everyone hates season 9 and loathed the finale, which was controversial at the time) she's going to cash in on what viewers remember from "the glory days" than to adhere to her own continuity or take risks yet.

I tend to dissect and overthink things, as well. I think with this one, it's best to just enjoy the reboot and not try to analyze it.

It's a little unsettling they didn't give us full closure, as there's still gaping plot holes and inconsistencies even after that joke about Dan's death in the premiere.

With season 10, they're virtually acknowledging that seasons 3-9 were fiction and that they are in another layer of Roseanne's story where all alternate realities and realities blur, and while it's confusing, I don't think any other sitcom has ever done this, so it's innovative in a sense (even though it makes no sense).

Despite this, I'm glad they've brought it back and they're continuing the narrative!

it's obvious that they have all actually been in purgatory the entire time and none of it really happened - ever since the REAL DJ left the gas on the stove on and blew up the entire house and family in the original pilot right after the credits.

Season 9 sucked. It was best to get rid of it as fast as possible.
