Jinny awoke to the sound of her father’s drunken laughter. She glanced at the clock. 5 AM. “Great,” she thought, “He’s already started.”
She figured she might as well get up and get ready for work. It was finally Friday. She had been looking forward to this day since Monday. Monday was the day that Jinny had been given a second chance. Teddy asked her to have dinner with him at Anchorside tonight. She hoped that he would take her back.
She climbed out of bed and walked to her closet. She stared blankly at the large selection of black t-shirts, sweaters, and jackets that hung before her. She sighed as she grabbed her favorite black shirt with a white collar. She grabbed a pair of jeans from the corner and put them on. She took a quick glance around the cluttered room before she left. “I’ll clean it tomorrow,” she thought, knowing that she wasn’t going to.
Jinny walked downstairs, only to find her father passed out on the couch, snoring loudly. She realized that that’s what she used to look like. Though she would be tempted to take a drink at times, she was not sorry that she quit. She walked to the kitchen to pour herself a cup of coffee. She turned on the radio to listen to the weather forecast and also to drown out the snoring. She groaned when she heard the forecast. Rain, rain and more rain. “What a nice way to start my day,” she thought. Maybe this was a sign. Maybe her day, and night, were going to be as bad as the weather.
