As most of you already know, my all-time episode of "The Incredible Hulk" is "Proof Positive," which aired in 1980 (during season three).
In the aforementioned "Proof Positive," Patricia Steinhauer--the daughter of the publisher of Jack McGee's tabloid newspaper, the National Register--decides to increase circulation by eliminating any and every mention of the Hulk, much to McGee's chagrin. In an effort to salvage his job at the Register (as well as to maintain his pursuit of the Hulk), McGee attempts to convince Patricia that the Hulk is real. Throughout "Proof Positive," there are several flashback scenes featuring McGee's various encounters with the Hulk (as well as the Hulk's alter ego, David Banner) over the last two years. Though Lou Ferrigno made an all-too-brief appearance as the Hulk, Bill Bixby did not appear in "Proof Positive," for unknown reasons...some sources claim Bixby was undergoing divorce proceedings with his then-wife, Brenda Benet (who later guest-starred as San Francisco-based psychic Annie Caplan in "The Psychic," airing six weeks after "Proof Positive"); other sources explain that Bixby was sidelined with a painful knee injury. As novice but firm publisher Patricia Steinhauer, Caroline Smith delivered a memorable performance in "Proof Positive"...her scenes--and overall chemistry--with Jack Colvin were wonderful; it's unfortunate that Patricia (and Smith herself) didn't become a regular or recurring character for the rest of the show's run. At the end of "Proof Positive," it's hinted that romance may be in the air for both McGee and Patricia. My question is this: Whatever happened to Caroline Smith? Smith was a capable actress with star-making potential that (sadly) never blossomed into a household name...though she worked occasionally throughout the '80s and into the '90s with supporting roles in a string of made-for-television films as well as guest appearances on "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," "St. Elsewhere," "Quincy, M.E.," "Airwolf," "Galactica 1980," "Scarecrow and Mrs. King," and "Designing Women," Smith never discovered the role that would've catapulted her into superstardom. According to IMdb (the Internet Movie Database), Smith's last two credits were in 1996...I guess she decided to ride off into the sunset and exterminate the acting bug for good. Drop me a line...I'd love to hear from you! Enjoy your evening! |
