Pretty soon I hope to have a marathon (over the course of a few nights) where I get to celebrate classic Nick at Nite. For me that's 1985 - 2004. By using DVDs of the shows, I'm forming a lineup. I've selected 60 shows (50 of them are complete on DVD, while the others may have a few seasons released, or in one case, a couple episodes were included as a bonus feature to another series' release). I don't have the episodes selected yet. When I do, I'll add them to this thread.
The show title followed by the year it debuted on Nick at Nite... #1. Dennis the Menace (1985) #2. The Donna Reed Show (1985) #3. Route 66 (1985) #4. My Three Sons (1985) #5. Mister Ed (1986) #6. I Spy (1986) #7. The Monkees (1986) #8. Car 54, Where Are You? (1987) #9. Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (1987) #10. Make Room for Daddy (1988) #11. Lancelot Link - Secret Chimp (1988) #12. The Patty Duke Show (1988) #13. Saturday Night Live (1988) #14. Bewitched (1989) #15. Lassie (1989) #16. Green Acres (1989) #17. The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1990) #18. Fernwood 2-Night (1990) #19. Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1990) #20. Dragnet (1991) #21. Get Smart (1991) #22. Mork & Mindy (1991) #23. The Adventures of Superman (1991) #24. The Dick Van Dyke Show (1991) #25. F Troop (1991) #26. The Lucy Show (1992) #27. The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1992) #28. The Partridge Family (1993) #29. The Bob Newhart Show (1993) #30. I Love Lucy (1994) #31. I Dream of Jeannie (1994) #32. The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour (1994) #33. Taxi (1994) #34. Welcome Back, Kotter (1995) #35. The Munsters (1995) #36. Rhoda (1996) #37. The Odd Couple (1996) #38. Happy Days (1996) #39. Newhart (1997) #40. The Wonder Years (1997) #41. The Brady Bunch (1998) #42. Laverne & Shirley (1998) #43. The Jeffersons (1999) #44. WKRP in Cincinnati (1999) #45. All in the Family (2000) #46. The Beverly Hillbillies (2000) #47. Gilligan's Island (2000) #48. The Andy Griffith Show (2000) #49. The Facts of Life (2000) #50. Three's Company (2000) #51. Diff'rent Strokes (2001) #52. Family Ties (2001) #53. Cheers (2001) #54. The Cosby Show (2002) #55. Coach (2002) #56. Wings (2003) #57. Roseanne (2003) #58. Full House (2003) #59. Who's the Boss? (2004) #60. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (2004) I've had to exclude some shows, mostly because I don't have any episodes on DVD to use. Such as SCTV (which is available but I just don't own them), Hi Honey, I'm Home, The Ann Sothern Show/Susie, The Smothers Brothers, Turkey Televison, and Flipper (which I own, decided not to include for various reasons). Of course in most reunion shows, there's always somebody missing. So it's appropriate that not every single show broadcast on Nick at Nite during those years are included in this marathon. It's also worthy of note that both "Laugh-In" and "SNL" were condensed down to half-hours on Nick at Nite. But since I'm using DVDs, I'll be watching their full-length episodes. Thanks to YouTube, in between a few shows, I'll watch some classic Nick at Nite commercials to really give me the feel of old time Nick at Nite. |

Actually, after posting this, I started to think that maybe I should add a few more shows to include the years 2001, 02 and 2003, which were also pretty decent. If I decide to do that, I'll update this thread.

Okay, I did just as I said I would. I decided to expand it to the year 2003 with "Wings" being the last show. That truly was the final time year I watched Nick at Nite on a regular basis.

That was like the beginning of the end because they ran Cosby and Roseanne into the ground. And today, they are doing the same thing.

Good idea! I want to do it, too. I'm choosing 40 sitcoms that premiered on N@N between it's debut to 2003. Episode picked at random...
I'm going to start this tonight and watch one show/episode a day until the list is completed. #1. Dennis the Menace (1985) "Dennis and the Rare Coin" (season 1) #2. Bewitched (1989) "Aunt Clara's Old Flame" (season 2) #6. Green Acres (1989) "Handy Lessons" (season 4) #7. The Lucy Show (1992) "Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna" (season 1) #8. The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1992) "Love is All Around" (season 1) #9. The Bob Newhart Show (1993) "The Last TV Show" (season 2) #10. I Love Lucy (1994) "The Freezer" (season 1) #11. The Nick at Nite guide I was using only went up to 2002. So I had to try and remember what shows came after that. And it wasn't until I did some more research that I found that "Roseanne" and "Full House" also joined in 2003. So I decided to include them in this (what seems to be ever-growing) lineup. But then I had the problem of wanting it to be an even number and decided to add two more shows to make it 60 (rather than 58). So I went into 2004 and added "Who's the Boss?" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." In case anybody is wondering why I added 2004... that's why.

Funny this thread should come up. In December, I read an article about the old Nick@Nite and how it was like belonging to a special club, with the TV in-jokes about the back of Patty Duke's head, etc. It's great to have DVDs but I miss the clever promos and the way Nick treated these old shows with reverence. Since then, I have been watching a lot of the old Nick shows on DVD nightly--sometimes as many as 10 on a Saturday or Sunday. Sometimes I throw in an episode of Hazel, too. It was on the Family Channel and WWOR but I really wish it had run on Nick in the '90s.
Some shows I find are harder to get into (Get Smart, My Three Sons) but others are a pleasant surprise. Back then, I avoided Mister Ed because I assumed the horse gimmick would be too goofy but now I find the show utterly charming and love the human characters. I'd watch a whole show starring only the Addisons! Alfred Hitchcock Presents is another one I am really enjoying for the first time. Macabre and ironic little tales that are wrapped up in a half-hour, with the added fun of playing spot-the-guest-star. I bought a bootleg set of The Ann Sothern Show from I-Offer as well as the public domain set of Private Secretary/Susie and though I wish the video quality was better, I am loving it! I do prefer the hotel setting over the first format. TLC you made some great picks for your marathon. I love those episodes of I Love Lucy, Mister Ed, All in the Family and Rhoda. And "The Tax Audit" is my all-time favorite episode of my all-time favorite show. So I guess that makes it my #1 Episode of All-Time! One of these days I'd like to do a video countdown of my Top 100 Episodes just like Casey Kasem used to do on Nick every New Year's Eve. I already have most of the list compiled but filming and editing everything will be a ton of work. Here's my "schedule" via DVDs: Route 66: "Ever Ride the Waves in Oklahoma" The Donna Reed Show: "The Football Uniform" My Three Sons: "Air Derby" Mister Ed: "The Other Woman" Car 54 Where Are You: "The Gypsy Curse" The Patty Duke Show: "Let 'em Eat Cake" Bewitched: "Ling Ling" Green Acres: "Oliver Buys a Farm" Dobie Gillis: "Soup or Fish" Alfred Hitchcock Presents: "Specialty of the House" Dragnet: "LSD Story" The Dick Van Dyke Show: "All About Eavesdropping" The Lucy Show: "Lucy is a Soda Jerk" Mary Tyler Moore: "The Lars Affair" The Partridge Family: "This Male Chauvinist Piggy Went to Market" I Love Lucy: "The Freezer" I Dream of Jeannie: "How to Marry an Astronaut" Rhoda: "Rhoda vs Ida" The Odd Couple: "The Fat Farm" The Brady Bunch: "Fright Night" Laverne and Shirley: "Guinea Pigs" The Jeffersons: "Mr. Piano Man" All in the Family: "The Bunkers and the Swingers" The Beverly Hillbillies: "The Giant Jackrabbit" Gilligan's Island: "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" The Facts of Life: "The Four Musketeers" Three's Company: "The Bake-Off" I agree that when The Cosby Show joined the line up in 2002, it was the beginning of the end. I never watched Nick@Nite after that. Though I do believe the real descent began in 1996 when Happy Days joined the lineup and they ran 3 episodes per night. Then, they delayed the evening schedule by 1/2 hr and Nick@Nite began at 8:30 instyead of 8PM. The additions of Newhart and The Wonder Years didn't help a few months later. Those shows were still way too recent to be airing on Nick. They jumped too far ahead IMO and they should have acquired some color '60s shows at that time like Hazel, Family Affair and The Flying Nun instead of totally immersing themselves in the 70s and 80s. |
