Default Questions about this show

Now that AntennaTV is showing Alice and I have a chance to watch it again, there are some things about this show that I never could understand.

1. Why does Mel's Diner need 3 waitresses? I mean, I could understand if they staggered their work times, but they always seemed to have the 3 waitresses working at the same time. Mel's Diner was a pretty small diner. Even if they were located in a very busy section of town, two waitresses at the most could have probably handled it.
I realize they probably needed to have all three working at the same time for the story lines, but I am just trying to think of it in a logical sense now.

2. And don't hate me, as I am sure there are quite a few Polly Holliday lovers on this board. But, what was Flo supposed to be, anyway... a sexpot? Someone the guys all wanted or something?
I ask that because as a child watching this show I never understood it. And now that I am older I still don't understand how the creators of the show wanted her to be seen. To me she always seemed like just one of those old ladies who wore big wigs and always put on too much perfume. Were male viewers expected to find her appealing, and did any?

We have diners in my town which are smaller than Mels and they usually at least have 3 waitresses working at a time.

You also have remember Mel's Diner didn't seem to have ppl that bust tables, so one of the waitresses had to do that. In fact if I remember right, it seemed to be mentioned that 1 waitress washed the dishes while the other 2 waited table most of the time.

Flo was supposed to be seen as "easy", I have noticed, for many men it doesn't matter what a woman looks like, if a man thinks he can score with her.

It's not that Flo was really a Hot babe, it was all in her attitude and how she conducted herself. She had just enough self confidence and thought of herself as sexy, so when she flirted with all the guys, they enjoyed her flirtatious ways, so they flirted back with her, which is what she wanted. Remember, all the guys she flirted with were all aging men with pot bellies. It wasn't really all about SEX or being seriously attracted to each other, it was all just flirtatious fun. Flo also thrived on their attention since she was mostly single. The more a man would flirt back with her, the more attractive she felt and acted.

If you think about most restaurants they have more than just a cook and waitress but in a diner like that you have a cook and wait staff. The wait staff picks up the slack of not having other staff to assist them: bussing, food running, hosting, cashier, dishwasher etc. To have three waitresses seems logical, especially during a lunch/dinner rush.

Flo was popular, a reputation for being easy, and her personality was large. She didn't overreach in her flirting outside the boundaries of those that were out of her league. She was not flirting with successful wealthy men but regulars at Mels diner. She was the hot to trot in her genre of men.

In the episode where Flo lost her trailer and had to say with Alice, Alice was saying she had to get up early to go to work and Flo said she didn't have to be at work until 10:00 but I thought they all had to be at work by7:00.
