Question Did the show end after 4 years because of Soleil's gigantomastia condition

https://screenrant.com/child-stars-fired-grew-fast/

Quote:
1. SOLEIL MOON FRYE – PUNKY BREWSTER

Puberty is no joke. Just ask the star of Punky Brewster, who was the subject of much bust-related humor after being diagnosed with Gigantomastia – a rare condition that causes massive breast growth in young girls. At the height of the show’s success, 12-year-old Frye’s changing shape stood in contrast to the child-like image they wanted for Punky. Recognizing Frye’s performance as instrumental to the show’s success, they elected to hang up the pig tails after season 4.

Suddenly, Frye couldn’t land age-appropriate roles, unless the characters were “wild girls”. At 16, she got a new lease on life when she underwent breast reduction surgery. She told People, “I’m finally free to be the teenager that I am.”

Frye has since seen success as a voiceover actress on such shows as Robot Chicken and Bratz.

This article is riddled with inaccuracies. But in the case of Punky Brewster, the show was not cancelled at “the height of its success”. In reality, NBC cancelled the show in 1986, and the show quietly produced an additional two seasons for first-run syndication. As soon as the show hit 88 episodes, the minimum required needed to “strip” the show (run it five days per week), production ended.

And it was not good how it ended. They should have lost some of the ideas in the final season, and made the last few where Punky's mother returned. We could have done without a few of the episodes that season and gotten a several part episode to end the series. We didn't need Brandon's wedding episode, that's for sure!

Punky Brewster could've in theory, lasted at least one or two more seasons. I'm assuming that it was still fairly popular when it ended in the spring of 1988. Maybe they decided to call it a wrap when they did because the show's draw was mainly at younger kids. In other words, the target audience was growing up and was likely going to soon start losing interest in the show.

According to Cherie Johnson, the show actually ended due to the Writers' Guild of America strike of 1988.

Johnson: The last episode came during a writer’s strike. The dog wedding wasn’t intended to be a final episode.

Alu: I think we didn't find out we were canceled until after the final episode was shot. In other words, we didn't know that the final show of the fourth season was the final show of the series. But then, who’s to say a dog wedding isn't a fitting exit?
