This was yesterdays ep. I was watching MTS while I was getting ready for work, but I went in the bathroom right at the end, not realizing it was ending right than!
How did it turn out? Was Ernie really allergic to Tramp after all or did it turn out to be something else?

Yes, he was allergic to Tramp. Steve came in to the living room, as Ernie was brushing him, and sneezing.
Steve mentioned they had another Dr. appointment for him. I guess we're to assume the Dr. took care of the problem, since it never came up again. |

Bonnie, just for you I pulled my original TV Land recording of this episode, Tramp Or Ernie, and they did have an "epilogue" scene that was probably cut from the ME TV showing. But still not much was resolved, in the epilogue Ernie is seen in the living room while Tramp lies on the couch and Ernie is brushing the burrs out of Tramps fur, Steve comes down the steps and says "Ernie, aren't you pushing your luck brushing Tramp?" Ernie says, "not at all, I've been brushing Tramp for a long time before and so far no sneezing." Then a second later as Steve starts to go out the door Ernie sneezes! I guess in the next episode never filmed they put Tramp down.

I've seen this episode on my local syndication station years ago, and they never showed the scene where it turned out that he was allergic to something else like they do with other sitcoms with such plot (Gilligan's Island: Allergy Time , Happy Days: The Fonz is Allergic to Girls, The Patty Duke Show: The Friendship Bit, Mister Ed: Ed The Sentry, Dennis the Menace: Wilson's Allergy, ,and the Brady Bunch: Katchoo!). Just the final hair brushing scene. And that's what I could never understand. But it's been my assumption that he got over being allergic to Tramp.

Years ago Channel 40 here showed M3S unedited (unfortunately, I did not retain this episode from those showings), and I don't recall any subsequent scene which reveals the typical "other" problem.
MeTV did show that Steve-coming-down-the-stairs tag scene, and the only resolution is Steve mentioning another appt. with Dr. Parker. We're left to assume that resolves the allergy problem. |

I think Steve even told Ernie that he might outgrow the allergy, close to the end of the episode. So maybe that's what happened. |

It was certainly an open-ended conclusion, leaving us somewhat unsatisfied.
Of course we know in hindsight that Tramp remains for the duration of the series run; viewers of the original airing could not look into the future (or for that matter, how many thought the series would last all the way to 1972?). For some episodes' plots, I might mention that the writers were of an earlier generation, drawing upon their childhood and life experiences -- advances in science of the '60s hadn't existed in their childhoods. Maybe a more conclusive solution to the allergic reaction could be found, but still, it's not something easily resolved. |

that happens a lot. Even with names... it is somewhat unlikely that a five year old little girl in 1969 would be called Dorothy ("Dodie"). It indicates the age of the writers rather than the character. You see it in today's shows too with teenage characters getting names like Jennifer and Melissa when these names were more popular in the writer's childhoods.
