Default Opening Credits

Interesting Ronny Howard got higher billing over Don Knotts. I'm watching goober takes a car apart. This is season 5 and I'm assuming Don Knotts has won some Emmys by this time.

Ron Howard's dad Rance must have been a shrewd negotiator .

He was a bigger star at that time, no?

Don Knotts came from the Steve Allen show so I don't think so. Ron did a few guest appearances like on Dennis the Menace.

Slightly off topic of above: The later B/W, more modern-looking OCs, with faster music, are becoming "lost." For some reason, on the DVDs and the syndication prints, they prefer the older-season OCs.

Also, for some reason, the later, color seasons' closing credits, with the credits playing over Andy and Opie returning from the fishin' hole, have also become lost. They were routinely shown on syndication episodes years ago.

I remember a cartoon squad car when they went in or out of commercials. Andy did a lot of peddling products on the first run and early syndication too. With his drawn out mmm mmm good.

I notice they changed the fishing hole drawing in the ending credits in the colorized episodes.

The later-season color syndication episodes had a live shot of Andy and Opie returning from fishing. I'd have to think the original network prints were shown that way also. For some reason, that has fallen out of favor.

Maybe to show that, regardless of how loyal a friend he was to Barney and dedicated he was to being a Sheriff, above ALL else, Andy's #1 role was being Opie's Pa!

yes, Don Knotts won 5 well-deserved Emmys for the show.

Not specific to TAGS, but I recall on older shows a big name often got last billing. I recall Joan Bennett getting "and" last billing on Dark Shadows. Shaorn Gabet I think also got that billing on "The Edge of Night" as did featured guest stars like Frank Gorshin. I don't think it was seen as a slight of any kind back then.

That's a good point -- Joan was a very accomplished film actress.

Even in much later years, lesser stars would be mentioned before ending with a known one -- I think Shelley Fabares was handled that way for openings of Coach.

I think the credit read "And Starring Joan Bennett as Elizabeth Stoddard" (or whoever she was playing, depending on the century of the given day)

Yes, she did. It was Alexandra Moltke (Victoria Winters) who got last billing.
