Default Why do game shows get cancelled after being a TV sensation?

In the game show world every so often when a game show is introduced the game show becomes a smash TV sensation then gets cancelled for no reason given and to me I think new game shows that are sensations should last a long time rather than get cancelled. Take for instance when ABC launched Who Wants To Be A Millionaire in the summer of 1999 it was a smash TV hit not just for ABC but became a sensation in TV shows but when the current syndicated version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire debuted with Meredith Veira started airing in 2002 it caused the ratings for ABC's Millionaire to go downhill and because of this ABC cancelled the original Millionaire and the syndicated version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is still going strong with Chris Harrison. A second game show to suffer the same fate was Deal Or No Deal and when it debuted in 2005 NBC had a huge monster hit on their hands but when Deal Or No Deal had their Million Dollar Mission premiere week for their final season in 2009 even after scoring two million dollar champions NBC cancelled Deal Or No Deal but Deal Or No Deal also had a syndicated version and it got cancelled after two seasons as well. GSN also started doing this to their game shows starting with the debut of The Chase and when The Chase debuted in 2013 it was GSN's popular game show and it scored GSN big ratings and a huge audience to the channel and when The Chase was cancelled GSN fans were shocked that GSN would cancel a show that was a hit. Another game show that GSN had that was a monster hit that also suffered the same thing was The American Bible Challenge and when it aired it's first episode Jeff Foxworthy became one of GSN's big successful stars but even with monster ratings The American Bible Challenge was cancelled with no reason explained and even now you don't see reruns of The American Bible Challenge shown on TV anymore. In my eyes this habit should stop and the game show world should have shows that are successful and fun and not suffer the cancellation fate and that should make fans of the game show world very happy indeed and gain a new audience of fans young and old alike

Hi, Bestie! What a great question! I say it is mostly about money. Studios, networks and the hosts are all wanting more money. When the show costs more than the money it brings in they just cancel it. They don't care about the audience, or the fans, or the show. They just care about the money. Sometimes a shows idea is so good, like WWTBAM, they revive it with new people. But it is just about the Benjamins! Again, great question, Bestie. As usual, you are one of the most intelligent bloggers here.

Another game show that suffered the same fate as Deal Or No Deal was 1 Vs 100 and when 1 Vs 100 came out it seemed to be a big hit but just like Deal Or No Deal when 1 Vs 100 had a million dollar winner 1 Vs 100 was gonna have a third season but NBC cancelled it for no reason then shortly after it's cancellation GSN revived 1 Vs 100 with a new look and had Carrie Ann Inaba replace Bob Saget as 1 Vs 100's new host for the GSN version and it too got cancelled as well. FOX also had success with Greed in 1999 and when it debuted Greed was indeed successful but when FOX changed the title to Greed The Series after it was originally known as Greed The Million Dollar Bonus and changing the title to Super Greed and finally having theme episodes on topics such as the 70's FOX made a wrong move by cancelling Greed instead of making new episodes because FOX was focusing on other shows and sitcoms rather than game shows. And to me if in the future FOX has plans to make another game show they should have more episodes of the game show rather than canceling it. I hope in the future more game shows will be made that will be TV sensations that will last a long time and still be huge monster hits in TV ratings
