Default So apparently I'm racist because I won't go in the hood

So I have discussed about my counseling program and how they were giving me a hard time. Even though I have a 4.0 GPA, they didn't want me in the program. Long story short I found out why.

When I started the program I told them I wanted to work with veterans. I do not want to work in ghetto areas (and trust me, Chicago has many ghetto areas). They asked me who else I would consider and I said anyone as long as they are in middle class areas. There is a need for people to work with gay drug users, and these are in nice areas, but kind of far from me. They told me about several areas near me but all are very bad areas, drug dealers, gangs, etc.

When I said no, I don't want to work there I was called a racist! First off, I know many African Americans and Hispanics and ALL are middle to upper-middle class. Not one is low income. I know several welfare users and all are white. Second, I don't care what race someone is, I am not putting my life in jeopardy for a job. The pay for these jobs is garbage also. I told them I don't go into these areas without a gun (yes I support gun rights) and of course they went on their stupid spiel about guns and crime, blah blah.

Not surprised. Chicago has to be one of the most liberal cities in the nation. You’re not going to fit in with that club. I don’t know what to tell you. Find a new school, I guess. Move to a smaller town.

Yeah Chicago is very liberal and while in some ways I like that, it also means too many SJW. I don't know why people can't admit that some people are trashy and they don't care?

Well having compassion is important for a substance abuse counselor, so saying you don’t care about some people doesn’t go well with the job description. That being said, you can probably find a safer place to work in that field besides Chicago, and your expenses would be much less. Illinois is a big state. Move to Springfield.

I look at this way, if these people don't care about themselves, why should I care? I originally went in with the idea of opening my own practice but I can't do it with this certificate.

Compassion and empathy are a necessary part of a counselor’s job. I hate to say this, but either go to another school in a smaller town and try to further your education in a small-town college, or find another line of work to go into. As it sounds right now, you’re at a dead end with this current university. You didn’t impress them with your comments. Time for Plan B.

Race isn't always the problem. My brother in law is a policeman in Flint, MI. The North End is mostly black and there's a lot of crime there. But he told me once that the East Side (mostly poor white) is equal or even worse than the the North End. Drugs, gangs, etc. I don't blame you one bit for wanting to work in a safer area.

Exactly, it's not race. I am pissed, I sent them a nasty message saying they are giving me a hard time because I don't want to work with low income.

Get this conversation with the one adviser. She reported me because of my comments of classism.

If you missed the internship deadline you must apply for summer 2018. Professor O (removing names) does not take late applications, as he has already had his orientation for spring.

My comment: I get that but this wasn't my fault. I applied for the counseling concentration and just found out I wasn't accepted.

Her response: That isn’t a valid reason to have missed the application process for COMPS. This isn’t my decision to make, these are the departmental rules.

My response that got flagged as inappropriate: So them screwing me over is fine then? Sorry but they kept giving me a hard time about the counseling concentration and yet they blame me? Utter BS (i used the full word). I guess I'll register for several elective classes, then take one internship in the summer. I know they are angry because I want to work with veterans, NOT low income trash.

Her response: Your language, tone, and classism below are very offensive and inappropriate. Such unprofessionalism from a student in a master’s program is disappointing to say the least - I am copying Dr. M and Dr. W so they can read how you feel about them.

I never mentioned anyone!

I think you just made the situation worse. Cut your losses and move on. There are other schools.

I contacted the other counseling program so we'll see what they say. As it turns out I am almost done with this program but yeah they've been giving me a hard time. I had my doubts from the get go.

Perhaps they don't think you are racist, but that you discriminate against poor people?

Honestly, I don't care if they think that. I don't want to work with poor people in the hood, especially since these jobs are low paid. Previously someone said I was racist because I don't want to work in the hood. They are the ones being racist by assuming all minorities live in the hood when that's not true.

Drug counselor is not for you. Try becoming a Stock broker. Really, it’s like if you don’t want to help people for a living there are much better paying jobs out there where you can just try to sell something and you won’t have to deal with poor people. Work for a Ferrari Dealership. Poor people aren’t going to be buying Ferraris. You won’t have to be around them and you can make a killing on commission if you’re good.

Somebody on another forum said that I was homophobic, but I’m not.
