I suppose it's Mr. Nabor's passing that made me think of this but he admitted that he merely exaggerated his Alabama accent for Gomer but what's a bit surprising is that his late colleague Frank Sutton was from Clarksville, Tennessee, yet had no trace of a Southern accent while playing the hotheaded, yet ultimately protective Sgt. Carter.
If there had been no Sgt. Carter, I somehow doubt Gomer would have lasted so long without that 'yang' trying to keep from being overwhelmed. Also, sometimes it was good to see someone being openly exasperated by Gomer's well-intentioned but goofball antics (and, of course, being 60's network TV, it was comforting to know that Sgt. couldn't call him anything worse than a 'knucklehead'). The performers seemed to get along fine offstage (at least enough to want to keep working together after GP:USMC ended) and I think Mr. Nabors was genuinely saddened but Mr. Sutton's comparatively early death. |
