NBC Fires Matt Lauer for "Inappropriate Sexual Behavior"
by Liam Mathews Nov 29, 2017 NBC News has fired longtime "Today" co-anchor Matt Lauer due to an allegation of sexual misconduct from a colleague. Lauer had been an anchor on "Today" since 1997 and is one of the series' best known on-air personalities. The filer and details of the complaint against Lauer have not been made public. "On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer," NBC News Chairman Andy Lack announced in a statement Wednesday morning, which Savannah Guthrie read on-air. "It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards. As a result, we've have decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he's been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident. Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events but we will face it together as a news organization — and do it in as transparent a manner as we can." During Wednesday's show, which began shortly after the "Today" team learned of Lauer's firing, Guthrie was joined by Hoda Kotb, who was filing in for Lauer on the 7 a.m. hour. After Lack's statement was read, both anchors echoed what Gayle King said about former "CBS This Morning" co-host Charlie Rose "This is a very tough morning for both of us. I've known Matt for 15 years as a friend and as a colleague," Kotb said. "It's hard to reconcile what we are hearing with the man who we know who walks in this building every day. We're processing it with all of you at home, and we promise to be transparent and be straight-forward and continue this important conversation," Guthrie added. http://www.tvguide.com/news/matt-lau...xual-behavior/ |

Remember, all of the men being accused of this are just nothing but liberals.

Well, the news industry anyway. That's one of the reasons I have cut down my watching tremendously. I'm sick of fashion model bimbos reading the news to me pretending they know what they're talking about. |

hopefully all the attention will prompt more victims to come forward, more people to listen to them, and make abusers think twice before disrespecting anyone again. |

Matt Lauer’s alleged sexual harassment includes exposing himself in his locked office and urging a female staffer to perform a sex act on him
Variety has published the results of its two-month investigation on Lauer in the wake of his firing, quoting three alleged victims — none of whom include the accuser whose complaint to NBC News on Monday night resulted in his ouster. Variety's Ramin Setoodeh and Elizabeth Wagmeister report that Lauer’s office “was in a secluded space, and he had a button under his desk that allowed him to lock his door from the inside without getting up,” which he used when inviting female staffers to engage them in inappropriate contact. One employee, Variety writes, alleges that she was invited to Lauer’s office, where he “dropped his pants, showing her his penis. After the employee declined to do anything, visibly shaken, he reprimanded her for not engaging in a sexual act.” Another colleague says Lauer gave her a sex toy with a note about how he wanted to use it on her. Lauer would also allegedly play “F, Marry, Kill” with female staffers and quiz them on their sexual experiences. Variety also reports that “Lauer would invite women employed by NBC late at night to his hotel room while covering the Olympics in various cities over the year.” NBC News chairman Andy Lack said in his statement this morning that the complaint about Lauer on Monday was "the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he's been at NBC News," Variety reports that "several women told Variety they complained to executives at the network about Lauer’s behavior, which fell on deaf ears given the lucrative advertising surrounding Today." NBC declined comment on Variety's report. ALSO:
Matt Lauer amassed a lot of power on Today — perhaps too much power NBC's Today, says Daniel D’Addario, “wasn’t quite The Matt Lauer Show, but that may have, at times, just been semantic: Lauer got many of the big interviews and his particular wry yet knife-twisting style of interviewing defined the show’s voice.” Now in wake of his firing over an allegation of sexual harassment, his past comes back for re-evaluation, especially the circumstances surrounding Ann Curry’s exit. “Lauer will eventually be replaced—notably, his substitute on the first morning after his firing was Hoda Kotb,” says D’Addario. “But it’s hard to imagine whomever comes in after him amassing quite as much fame or as much seeming ability to question along whatever lines he sees fit—lines that are, now, well worth re-examining critically and carefully. Lauer was on his way to becoming a TV legend; instead, now, he’s just another name on a long list.” ALSO:
Report: Matt Lauer was brought down by lewd texts to an NBC intern that included an incriminating photo An NBC News employee who worked as an intern at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics had texts that presented “incontrovertible proof of inappropriate sexual behavior on his part,” sources tell the New York Post's Page Six. The texts were the reason why NBC News was able to move quickly to fire Lauer. A source also says that the employee had hired a “high-power attorney” who would’ve gone public, possibly to another network, if no action was taken. “There’s at least one picture (sent to her by Matt) which was a major part of the evidence, which is why the firing came so quickly … my understanding was it was so damning that it was unquestionable whether or not he should be fired,” a source tells Page Six. “I think everyone was a bit surprised how quickly this all turned around. No one expected his termination to happen that quickly. I believe the silver bullet was the photo and that was so damning that they had no other option but to fire him.” ALSO: Watch video Lauer creepily telling Meredith Vieira to “keep bending over like that. It's a nice view." There was no mention of Matt Lauer on NBC's Christmas in Rockefeller Center Today’s Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker and Hoda Kotb hosted tonight's live special, while NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt stepped in halfway through for what he said was his first appearance on the annual event. After Geraldo Rivera defends Matt Lauer, video of Bette Midler detailing his alleged sexual misconduct resurfaces Rivera tweeted this afternoon he was “sad” about the firing of “great guy” Lauer, adding that “News is a flirty business & it seems like current epidemic of #SexHarassmentAllegations may be criminalizing courtship & conflating it w predation.” His tweets about sexual harassment prompted the resurfacing of an interview Barbara Walters conducted in which Bette Midler recalled how Rivera and his producer once “pushed me into my bathroom, they pushed two poppers under my nose, and proceeded to grope me...I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera. He was unseemly.” ALSO: Rivera’s defense of Lauer is keeping with his own history of making no apologies for his own sexual misdeeds. |

Watch Meredith Vieira question Matt Lauer about his “huge bag of sex toys in your office closet”
Vieira put her former Today co-host on the spot during an appearance on The Meredith Vieira Show in 2015. Lauer explained that the sex toys belonged to a sex therapist whom he had interviewed. “True story,” said Lauer. “I didn’t know what to do. I put it in the closet of my dressing room. The next day, we had Bush on the show, the Secret Service came with the dogs to sweep our dressing room … they open up the thing and they’re opening up the bag, I’m like ‘oh my God!'” On Wednesday, Variety reported that Lauer would use sex toys in his alleged sexual harassment of female Today staffers. ALSO:
Matt Lauer’s apology wasn’t much of an apology The fired Today host may have said he was “truly sorry,” but his entire statement is “the latest iteration in the popular new genre of powerful men acknowledging their misdeeds while attempting to avoid admitting to serious wrongdoing,” says Constance Grady. She points out that the bulk of his statement is devoted to his regret at being caught. “For an ‘apology,’ it’s less ‘I am sorry that I did something terrible’ and more, ‘I am embarrassed that I was caught,’” she says. Eric Deggans adds that there has become “a sad ritual to these sexual harassment/assault media scandals; subject denies every allegation is true, yet still apologizes without admitting serious guilt; those still employed express sorrow, praise those who came forward.” ALSO:
Females make up two of the top three highest-paid anchors following Matt Lauer's firing ABC’s Robin Roberts and NBC’s Megyn Kelly join Fox News’ Sean Hannity as the highest-paid anchors. Matt Lauer apologizes: “There is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed” "There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions," Lauer said in a statement that Savannah Guthrie read on air at the top of this morning's Today show. "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort," Lauer said. "It is now my full time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It's been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace." ALSO: One TV critic tweets that Lauer's statement "rings so false." Another TV critic adds that "these statements are all beginning to sound even more alike than the accusations. Is one crisis manager writing all of them?" Matt Lauer’s sexual harassment problem was hiding in plain sight at NBC News Vanity Fair’s Sarah Ellison reports that Lauer’s sexual harassment problem “was hiding in plain sight” in the aftermath of the Harvey Weinstein story, which NBC News passed on -- one high-level source even says "everybody knew." For weeks, Ellison writes, NBC News executives “had been hearing rumors of stories being reported at Variety and The New York Times about Lauer’s alleged sexual relationships with NBC bookers and producers.” They even questioned Lauer about the rumors, which he adamantly denied. Ellison further explains that because Lauer was frequently followed by paparazzi, the only place he could engage in sexually inappropriate behavior was in his office or on the road. According to her reporting, there were “two groups of women that Lauer seemed to focus his attention on: interns, pages, and production assistants in charge of running scripts in the morning; and also bookers.” Ellison explains that Lauer’s downfall could’ve come from “any number of his current or former colleagues,” speculating, based on one source, that Megyn Kelly might’ve helped women come forward. (A person close to Kelly denies this is true.) “Similarly,” she adds, “NBC insiders saw the hand of Ann Curry, whom Lauer ousted, in his demise, and possibly even Billy Bush.” But neither could be reached for comment. ALSO:
Networks became too reliant on larger-than-life TV news stars, as shown in the firings of Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose “As leading national news hosts able to reach millions of people, Mr. Lauer and Mr. Rose are in a different sphere,” says Jim Rutenberg. “The notion of anchor as authority — a stubbornly male prototype that goes back to the pre-feminist days of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite — was flawed to begin with. And yet, news organizations continue to depend on stars to what often seems like an unhealthy degree. In this, they are not so different from Hollywood producers whose main concern is having a big opening weekend. The stature of the men behind the desk was such that they ended up holding a high level of power within their organizations to go with their lavish pay. And, per the accusations against them, they used it on underlings who, as one of Mr. Lauer’s accusers put it to The Times, did not feel as if they were able to say no or repeat mistreatment to higher-ups. ALSO:
Today will never be the same, especially with its notion of “family” For years, promoted the fiction that the Today show was like family with its “manufactured conviviality,” which “NBC played into that by steadily creating cults of personality around its anchors,” says Sonia Saraiya. “And yet," she adds, "Wednesday morning, turning on Today brought the sexual harassment movement right to your home, whether you wanted it or not. Now that we all know about Matt Lauer’s secret button that locked the door behind unsuspecting women he called into his office, the illusion of a happy television family is hard to believe in. Now the viewing audience has to reckon with the fact that the man they knew and watched for 20 years is, according to the company who made his career and the co-anchor who still calls herself his friend, a predator.” ALSO:
Late-night hosts tended to discuss Matt Lauer’s firing by mentioning President Trump Stephen Colbert opened his Late Show monologue by saying “I am one of the few men still allowed on television.” Jimmy Kimmel weighed in saying, “If anyone knows about inappropriate behavior at the workplace at NBC, it’s Donald J. Trump. Is he aware that he’s him? I don’t think he is. I think he sees Donald Trump on TV and goes, ‘I like that guy.'” Colbert and Jimmy Fallon also brought up how Trump tweeted about the fired Today show host. ALSO:
NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk explains her “incredibly strange” job of covering the Matt Lauer firing Gosk tells Rachel Maddow she’s been trying to cover Lauer’s firing as she covered the firing of Charlie Rose last week. But she adds, “it gets difficult because I’m in this building. And although some of the conversations I’ve have had in this building have been on the record, things that are being shared publicly, very obviously there are also other conversations that I overhear amongst colleagues, things that are being said privately to each other, that are things that typically a reporter might glob onto and want to report. I have to draw those lines just by the very nature of the fact that I’m in this newsroom all day long.” Gosk says she chose not to attend a closed-door NBC News staff meeting because she wouldn’t be able to report its details. Matt Lauer didn’t have his secret door-lock button installed — General Electric did, many years ago
“The mechanism was a standard feature in many of the older offices at 30 Rockefeller Center,” reports Paul Farhi, who adds that “the buttons had more innocent purposes when they were installed years earlier by General Electric, which owned NBC for years and shared office space with the network.” He also reports that “the feature was a perk for top executives who wanted privacy for personal calls or as security in the event of a calamity — such as an active shooter within the building. It’s not clear how many people at NBC News had offices equipped with the device.” NBC News boss announces a “thorough” review of Matt Lauer’s “appalling behavior,” says “the system works” “This week we saw that when an employee comes forward to report misconduct, the system works,” NBC News chair Andy Lack said in a statement to his staff. “The complaint is quickly assessed and meaningful action is taken. But we also learned that we must do a much better job of making people feel empowered to take that crucial first step of reporting bad behavior.” In addition to announcing “in-person” sexual harassment training — to supplement online training — Lack announced that “a team of the most experienced NBCUniversal Legal and Human Resources leaders have begun a thorough and timely review of what happened and what we can do to build a culture of greater transparency, openness and respect for each other. At the conclusion of the review we will share what we’ve learned, no matter how painful, and act on it.” ALSO:
Seth Meyers did not hold back in slamming former NBC colleague Matt Lauer While fellow NBC late-night host Jimmy Fallon told “one measly joke” in response to Lauer's firing, Meyers — whose response to Lauer’s firing was delayed because Wednesday’s Late Night was pretaped — “came back with a vengeance on Thursday,” says Matt Wilstein. Last night's “A Closer Look” segment went into detail on the “disturbing” allegations against the former Today star, including the “F, Marry, Kill” game and the dildo he brought to work. “I don’t know who you said you’d marry in those situations, but I do know that you killed your career and f*cked yourself,” said Meyers. The Late Night host also highlighted what was considered Lauer's preferential treatment for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton at last year’s Commander-in-Chief forum. Meyers also showed a clip of Lauer interviewing another accused sexual harasser, Bill O’Reilly, just a few months ago. “Wow, he was talking to Bill O’Reilly, but he just as easily could have been talking to a mirror,” Meyers said. ALSO:
NBC seems plagued with problems, especially when it comes to sexual harassment Matt Lauer, Donald Trump and Mark Halperin all share two things in common: NBC as a former employer and accusations of sexual harassment. Then there is NBC News’ questionable decision to spike Ronan Farrow’s bombshell Harvey Weinstein story. “Here,” says Ben Mathis-Lilly, “we have a network and its news operation that could have changed the course of two of the biggest stories of the past two years: Trump and sexual assault. Instead it suppressed news in a way that helped bad actors keep or obtain power. And I haven’t even mentioned that its most famous anchor never came fully clean about having made up a war story. What is NBC doing?” Report: NBC News bosses questioned Matt Lauer “multiple times, in multiple ways (and) in multiple settings” in recent weeks The former Today anchor was grilled in the days before a formal complaint was filed against him. Lauer responded that he was “racking his brain and couldn’t think of anything at all” when confronted by NBC News chairman Andy Lack and NBC News president Noah Oppenheim in the two weeks before he was fired, reports Paul Farhi. Both executives weren’t contacted by Variety or The New York Times, which were investigating Lauer. But both publications did reach out to lower-level staffers, who tipped off their bosses, prompting their questioning of Lauer. As Farhi, reports, “in addition to asking Lauer about the rumored allegations, the network searched its human-resources and legal archives to see if there were any complaints or settlements involving Lauer...They found none..."
