Well, we are having a debate at school in a few days and I've been grouped with a few people who do no work. Therefore, it's my job to compile all the information and present it-ugh! Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could give me your opinion on something... I have to prove that music does not influence our culture/society. Whether it be the beat of the music or the lyrics. Any help on this is much appreciated. Thanks a ton, guys!

Well......wow ok.
View one: I think some music does def. influence. I mean half the lyrics out there are about having sex, smoking pot and drinking alcohol. You must admit, that if a 10 year old listens to that, it must have a little bit of influence on them. I've basicaly given up on music today. It's all the same. Cheating boyfriends, how your gonna get back at 'em, etc etc. I've basically just switched to Christian. Now I know most of you here listen to today's music so you can bitch and moan at me but....It's just my opinion. View two: Maybe kids shouldn't take things seriously. A song can't drive someone over the edge....can it? |

all i know is that rap is a bad influence on young kids (6-18). i'll use the statements and things i used from my debate.
1) Kids look up to other people whether it's a dad, mom, celeb, or singer. And if they see someone they admire doing someone the first thing they'll think is "oh, so since they're doing it, then it must be cool...." where do we get all of our fashion trends from? the media. the stars, who wore what on the red carpet. so, hello, we are copying people, not exactly copying them. but they do influence us and so do rapers. 2) violence has gone way up in the us for teens. like gang killings, murderes, etc. i don't know the figures but it was like over 20 percent increase i think. 3) rap's lyrics are not exactly education. hey **** why the **** did you **** ***** the **** over ****** there? you can barely hear the words cuz you're getting bleeped out (not on cds though). ok...i'm like sooo ot now lol. it felt good though. lol. mexican music hs influenced us, like the salsa. it's made movies, and everything. and selena, she influenced the world with her music. yep...that's all! |

Let's see if you can twist that just a little and get a way with it because music has always had an influence on every society so that isn't a fair assignment. But if you make this argument, maybe it will be acceptible: Todays music has NO MORE of an influence on culture and society than the music of the past or music of other cultures has had on their societies. In the present that doesn't seem to be true because we get so caught up in how notorious or how progressively beautiful the music that we are living with is that we forget that Bach's music was just as influential in his day as todays musicians and bands are on our day. The same is true of, for example, African slaves and their spiritual music. Other examples of that sort that you can find might help you to make your point. I'm sorry if that little twist of the assignment doesn't pass muster with your teacher but it's worth a try.
The music and the people of the Applachian Mountains is another example of musical influence on culture, historically. |

Some rap is ok... such as the ones where every other word isn't beeped out (like in Ja Rule's 'Livin It Up' he keeps on going 'To all my ****ers that be livin it up')
the only rap I actually like is Ludacris... I mean, yeah, he swears, but not as much as some of the other people... and his songs actually have a beat not just some freak rappin senslessly. |

I think that music should not influence people, but look at all the rap videos out there! They are all so sexist! It just shows a lot of pretty women in bikinis, and all the lyrics are about how you should only like girls that are beautiful and sexy, just forget about if they have good personalities or have any brains! And some of them are about drugs too. In my school its a MAJOR problem, and i DO think that it's because of music. Rappers make it sound so cool and everything, but i dont see the point. OK, i'm a little off topic there, but hey hope that helped!
