Confused Ward's Suit

Several episodes show Ward dressed casually in the afternoon and all suited up at night. In Beaver's Old Buddy Ward has on casual garb when he's offering to take Beaver and Jackie to the movies. Later before dinner he's in a suit. In Wally's Dream Girl they spend the afternoon at Friend's Lake and later on the couch June has on a nice dress and Ward's in a suit. Just really strange because it's a weekend.

I often felt like the show had unrealistic wardrobes; this was supposed to be a typical, middle-class family. Yet they were dressed to the nines at inappropriate times. Like when June was doing the cleaning while wearing a pearl necklace, and those times when Ward was wearing a suit at dinner, after dinner, during the weekend... heck, he probably wore that suit to bed!

I guess we have to realize it was a tv show and June was showing off fashions as indicated in the credits. It was just weird seeing Ward at 9:00 pm still in a suit and reading that same prop paper like in Beaver's Poster. June looking fresh as a daisy all dressed up at night. I wish they acted the way they did in the first season really laid back and natural. They all got so formal and regimented.

I agree. I'm surprised to see Ward in casual clothes in season 4. In season 5 we might see him casual in the first episode in the golf clubhouse, but let's see if he's out of his suit and tie any other time.

And wouldn't it be something to see June come to breakfast in a bathrobe (also with pearls, of course)?

Breakfast is weird because sometimes we see June all dressed and coiffed cooking breakfast and other times in her robe (Eddie Spends the Night). Usually it's a weekend when she's not all dressed because no one goes to school or work. Sometimes Ward sleeps late and once he's shaving in the afternoon (Beaver's Fortune).

Wow! I need to be more observant. I didn't notice she had a robe on in Eddie Spends the Night (of course, I did notice George Haskell became Frank--typical of season 4).

Contemporary shows were similar in regard to attire; on Dennis the Menace, George Wilson practically always wears a necktie. Even a few years later on, on Hazel's mid-60s eps, George Baxter dresses quite formally much of the time -- and even while just reading a book, wearing a sweater, his necktie is present.

Wouldn't it be something to see Ward in jeans and a sport shirt and June in sweats and no pearls on?

Yeah watching Dan Connor in those baggy jeans and felt shirt with a big stomach hanging over the belt isn't great for the eyes. I believe Roseanne often mentions June in a less than complimentary light.

June wore pants in several episodes and looked quite nice in her jeans.

I didn't see many episodes of that show, but I do remember that beer belly. They did a couple of funny parody episodes...I think they did Father Knows Best, and maybe Patty Duke.

A couple of other funny parodies were when King of Queens took off on The Honeymooners, and the Wayans Bros. did Good Times.

Roseanne's Patty Duke parody was one of the funniest show parodies I think I've ever watched. Sarah coming down the stairs in Cathy's fancy ball-gown, while Lecy dances like Patty, is done just perfectly. And the hokey split screen scene is very meta.

I don't remember Roseanne doing Father knows Best, but I remember they also brought in the "Sitcom Moms": June Cleaver, Weezey Jefferson, "Lassie's mom", and the mom from the Wonder Years. Part One and Part Four.

(They also did a parody of Gilligan's Island, but IMO that one was less funny. Although I did like it when the Gilligan's Island cast parodied Roseanne.)

Roseanne also said Ward Cleaver was a smoker in one episode. Which we know is false.
