Default Miss Landers Fiance

On Thursday morning, METV aired the episode Miss Landers Fiance. The episode to me was memorable since I found out that Miss Landers' first name was Alice and that her fiance Tom Brittingham was the first of two characters to call Beaver "Teddy." Who was the other?

Mary Margaret, the eighth grade siren from season 6. To which Beaver replied that no one had ever called him Teddy before.

In Jerry's book, he says we never found out Miss Landers' first name (wrong-o, Jerry!)

You're right about Mary Margaret Matthews. She was the other person to call him "Teddy."

Love it when she calls Gilbert 'Gilly'.

Since Miss Landers evidently didn't return the final season to teach Beav's middle school class, it's possible she may have married Mr. Brittingham offscreen but we never learned for sure (and the performer Sue Randall herself DIED before the first reunion happened so Beav only got to see Miss Canfield his 2nd grade teacher who evidently had NOT gotten married in the interrum but had become Mrs. Rayburn's replacement as principal). Yes, it would have been nice to have 'updated' the viewers on Miss Landers's fate in the movies, new series, etc. even with Miss Randall dying but that never happened.

OK, I'm biting what WAS Miss Landers's given name?

It's Alice. Mr. Brittingham calls her by name in this episode. It's the only episode where we hear her given name.

Kind of like we only hear Whitey's real name, Hubert, in only one episode.

I think it would have been nice if they could have made some kind of mention to Ms Landers in the reunion movie/TV series. She was a big part of Beaver's life, even more so than Ms Canfield. I did like though that Ms Canfield took over Rayburn's position.

Kind of off-topic--it would really be great to find a nice, clean DVD set of The New LITB. The set I have is horrible, almost unviewable.

I agree with the sentiments about Miss Landers.

Speaking of first names, I believe we only hear Mrs. Rayburn's first name in Beaver Gets 'Spelled. She sends Ward flowers and signs the card, Cornelia Rayburn.

Miss Landers evidently didn't marry Tom because in Nobody Loves Me Beaver goes to visit Miss Landers and she remembers him but she's still Miss Landers.

This came up one other time. It's mentioned once more, I think in the first season. I can't remember exactly when.

Doris Packer was quite talented. She had several roles on Burns and Allen, most notably Mrs. Sohmers. Some very funny scenes with her and Gracie in multiple episodes.

I remember that one! You're probably right that it's more likely than not that she did NOT marry Mr. Brittingham.

However; there does exist the tiny possibility that she could have married him but opted to keep teaching using her maiden name as her 'teaching name' (which was the one of the most confusing plots of "Courtship of Eddie's Father" when Eddie's teacher announced her pregnancy).

In any case, it was nice to see her one last time and to have her warmly welcome Beav's visit to her classroom (and I imagine she likely would have told Judy Hensler she was too busy to talk so never attempt to visit her again at her workplace).

She was nice to Beaver, but didn't help matters any when she told him (not knowing what he was going through) he'd shot up like a beanpole.

She also appeared as Chatsworth Osbourne Jr.'s mother on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-63). Those eps obviously overlapped with some of her LITB work.

Later, Doris did some memorable work on The Beverly Hillbillies, like when she appeared as Cynthia Fenwick's mom -- "The Widow Fenwick" as the Clampetts referred to her.
