I always thought this schedule was weird, not shocking considering the shape NBC were in at the time. I revised the schedule with the idea of maybe my version would've helped soften the blow of losing Cosby, Golden Girls, and etc.
Original lineup NBC Saturday Night 800pm - Here and Now 830pm - Out All Night 900pm - Empty Nest 930pm - Nurses 1000pm - Sisters NBC Sunday Night 700pm - Secret Service 800pm - I Witness Video 900pm - NBC Sunday Night at the Movies NBC Monday Night 800pm - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 830pm - Blossom 900pm - NBC Monday Night at the Movies NBC Tuesday Night 800pm - Quantum Leap 900pm - Reasonable Doubts 1000pm - Dateline NBC NBC Wednesday Night 800pm - Unsolved Mysteries 900pm - Seinfeld 930pm - Mad About You 1000pm - Law & Order NBC Thursday Night 800pm - A Different World 830pm - Rhythm & Blues 900pm - Cheers 930pm - Wings 1000pm - L.A. Law NBC Friday Night 800pm - Final Appeal 830pm - What Happened? 900pm - The Round Table 1000pm - I'll Fly Away My Version NBC Saturday Night 800pm - The Powers That Be 830pm - Almost Home 900pm - Empty Nest 930pm - Nurses 1000pm - Sisters NBC Sunday Night 700pm - I Witness Video 800pm - Quantum Leap 900pm - NBC Sunday Night at the Movies NBC Monday Night 800pm - The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 830pm - Blossom 900pm - NBC Monday Night at the Movies NBC Tuesday Night 800pm - Wings 830pm - Mad About You 900pm - Reasonable Doubts 1000pm - Dateline NBC NBC Wednesday Night 800pm - Unsolved Mysteries 900pm - Homicide: Life on the Street 1000pm - Law & Order NBC Thursday Night 800pm - Here And Now (short lived show starring Malcolm Jamal Warner of Cosby Show, made better sense to have it air on Thursday) 830pm - A Different World 900pm - Cheers 930pm - Seinfeld 1000pm - L.A. Law NBC Friday Night 800pm - Rythmn & Blues 830pm - Out All Night 900pm - I'll Fly Away 1000pm - The Round Table |

I wouldn't change much apart from having a NFL postgame show on weeks that NBC has a doubleheader.

You ever read the Masked Scheduler, Preston Beckman? He said that when he joined NBC's scheduling department his first instinct was to slide Seinfeld post-Cheers. He was informed by NBC brass that they had made a time-period commitment to Paramount Television as part of a renewal of Cheers. Paramount's Wings had to air behind Cheers for two and a half seasons so it could get into syndication. As soon as the commitment was done NBC slid Seinfeld right in there.

Why would Paramount ask that Wings air after Cheers, so it could get into syndication?

Yes. Paramount knew the show wouldn't have an audience on its own so they used Cheers as leverage. Carsey-Werner had a similar contractual set-up with Cosby/A Different World.
NBC was able to get-away from time-period commitments for a few years until WB's Veronica's Closet in the late-90s which came from the 'Friends people.' |
